St Martin of Tours Episcopal Church is a B listed Victorian church in the centre of Edinburgh. The church building, like many from the 19th Century, is struggling to provide the congregation and community with accommodation that meets contemporary expectations. Active links with the local and diverse urban community is a vital part of life at St Martin’s and the church has decided to make a number of strategic alterations to improve the facilities.
The essential components of this project are:
1 – Providing barrier free access from the street: New point of entry on the side of the church
2 – Improving support facilities to sanctuary: New kitchen, toilet and office under balcony
3 – Providing easy access to the lower floor: New stair and lift at front of plan near entrance
4 – Improving the sense of transparency and welcome: reworking of threshold into sanctuary
5 – Provision of more multi purpose community space: reorganisation of lower halls
The completed phase 1 project has breathed life back into the interior of the building, permitting a more legible and accessible range of flexible served spaces. Most significant is the increased sense of welcome at street level, with views now possible from the entrance into the church and beyond into the sanctuary itself.
Comments from the congregation:
‘Wow! the front doors are open, I can see right in through to the back wall of the main hall, it is bright, light and exciting’
‘We are delighted with the new facilities at the SMCRC, which include bespoke storage for our stock of toys and a new accessible toilet with baby‐changing facilities, which is a real boon for our parents and carers, who previously had to struggle down a steep and narrow staircase’
