Al Ain Oasis Hub, UAE Architectural Development
Located at the edge of one of the United Arab Emirates’ most treasured cultural landscapes, the Al Ain Oasis Hub by Aedas introduces a new civic destination considered as an extension of the oasis itself. Rather than presenting a singular architectural object, the project unfolds as a landscape experience shaped by water, light, movement, and immersion, carefully balancing public life with heritage preservation.
Site Location
Positioned beyond the UNESCO-protected boundary, the Oasis Hub forms a welcoming threshold between the historic palm groves of Al Ain Oasis and the contemporary city. The design enhances public access while maintaining deep respect for the environmental, cultural, and sensory qualities that define the oasis as a place of pause, reflection, and encounter.
Light is introduced as an experiential layer within the landscape. Along key pathways, integrated illumination guides visitors through the oasis, transforming movement into a memorable and immersive experience. Subtle lighting elements interact with water surfaces, planting, and ground textures, creating moments of reflection and discovery that encourage a slower pace and deeper engagement with the environment.
Water plays a central role in shaping atmosphere and experience. Contemporary interpretations of the falaj system are woven throughout the courtyards, providing evaporative cooling and creating moments of reflection, movement, and sensory engagement. Shaded spaces, layered planting, and water elements work together to establish a comfortable microclimate throughout the year.
Interactive landscape features and multi generational play zones are seamlessly integrated into the courtyards, encouraging movement, exploration, and social interaction.
The design of the Al Ain Oasis Hub is structured around water as a spatial and experiential medium. Drawing from the historic falaj system, water is reinterpreted through three conditions that shape the public realm. Moments of reflection create stillness and visual depth, flowing channels guide movement through shaded landscapes, and shallow edges with mist form immersive environments. Together, these conditions define a civic landscape where water shapes space, movement, and memory.
Reflection – Water as a mirror
The masterplan is organised around three primary courtyards, positioned in response to existing palm rhythms and site specific microclimatic conditions. These outdoor spaces function as social anchors, offering shaded environments enhanced by water features, interactive landscapes, and informal gathering areas.
Movement – Water as a meandering path
Movement through the site is intuitive and immersive. A network of shaded pathways, textured ground treatments, and strategically placed landscape elements guides visitors through a sequence of open and enclosed spaces. The layering of softscape and hardscape improves thermal comfort while reinforcing clarity, orientation, and a sense of calm progression.
Immersion – Water as a sculptural mist
The East Gate zone forms the project’s main point of activation. Here, food and beverage outlets, small retail kiosks, and integrated seating areas are embedded discreetly within the landscape. Building heights are intentionally kept low, preserving uninterrupted views of the palm canopy and maintaining the visual openness of the oasis edge.
The Al Ain Oasis Hub reimagines the edge of the oasis as a contemporary civic landscape defined by immersion rather than monumentality. Through water, light, and a carefully choreographed journey, the project offers a renewed way of engaging with Al Ain’s living heritage.
By framing everyday activities within the rhythms of palm, shade, and water, the design transforms the oasis edge into a place of gathering, discovery, and continuity, ensuring that the spirit of the oasis remains accessible to future generations.

“Understanding a place like Al Ain Oasis is not about recreating its visual identity, but about recognizing the intelligence behind it, its systems, its scale, and its relationship with climate and people. Our ambition was for the project to be embraced by the community, and seeing that sense of pride confirms it has found its place within the oasis.” — Ignacio Gomez, Global Design Principal, Aedas
