CONTRACT SIGNED FOR CONSTRUCTION OF KPF-DESIGNED MIDFIELD TERMINAL BUILDING AT ABU DHABI AIRPORT

New terminal building to start on site 3rd quarter of 2012, with completion due in 2017

London UK – July 03, 2012 – Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) and the joint venture of TAV, CCC, and Arabtec have signed an AED 10.8 billion (approx. £1.87 billion) contract for the construction of the Midfield Terminal Building at Abu Dhabi International Airport, designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates. With ground works already underway, opening of the airport is planned in 2017.

Construction of the 700,000 sqm terminal building, one of the major infrastructure projects being undertaken in the capital, will commence in the third quarter of this year. The project includes two key phases – a four year construction phase, followed by the Operational Readiness Assessment phase, when all aspects of the Terminal will be subject to intensive testing to ensure operational efficiency and readiness.

Mustafa Chehabeddine, KPF Design Principal said, “One of the fundamental design objectives for the new Terminal has been to accommodate the high level of capacity and adaptability required, while providing the highest quality passenger experience. The departure hall is 50m tall at its highest point, creating an openness that allows for meaningful connectivity between outdoor landscaping and indoor civic space.”

On plan, the X-shape provides the greatest programmatic efficiencies, enabling the terminal to house 49 gates which will ultimately process around 50 million travellers each year. Passenger facilities and duty-free retail will include high-end commercial offerings across more than 18,000 sq m, and almost 10,000 sq m of international restaurants and cafes. Facilities will also include over 27,500 sq m of airline hospitality lounges, a transit hotel and a heritage and culture museum.

KPF, together with Arup, NACO and BNP Associates, has designed the new Terminal to achieve a minimum Two Pearl Rating, following the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council’s Estidama approach towards sustainable design. The project will minimize its impact on the environment, making use of innovative elements, such as high performance angled glass to reduce heat and increase air-conditioning efficiencies.

The Midfield Terminal Building is the cornerstone of ADAC’s vision to deliver the highest quality services and infrastructure to serve Abu Dhabi and the world. KPF’s design focuses on optimising passenger experience and meets the highest quality and service standards, including the International Air Transport Association (IATA) level of service ‘A’ – the highest levels of space allocation for passenger processing areas.

The Midfield Terminal Complex is integral to Plan Abu Dhabi 2030, a framework for the Emirate’s future development and projected population growth.

Operational highlights include:

• Piers will accommodate up to 65 aircraft, including the Airbus A-380
• Check-in is capable of handling around 8,500 passengers per hour
• Check-in will provide 165 conventional counters and 48 self-service kiosks
• Baggage system is designed to process over 19,000 bags per hour with over 22 km of conveying lines and 10 reclaim carousels
• 136 security screening lanes for passengers, with a further 25 for staff
• The building will be constructed using approximately 69,000 tons of steel, more than 680,000 cubic metres of concrete, and nearly 500,000 square metres of steel and glass cladding, 135,000 tons of rebar, 360,000 square metres of suspended ceilings and 325,000 square metres of natural stone flooring

NEW TERMINAL COMPLEX FOR ABU DHABI AIRPORT RECEIVES GOVERNMENT APPROVAL

The Executive Council of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi has approved the new terminal complex design by Kohn Pedersen Fox.

London UK – February 03, 2012 – Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF), the new Midfield Terminal Complex at Abu Dhabi International Airport has been approved by the Executive Council of Abu Dhabi. With ground works already commenced on site, a contractor will now be appointed to commence work on the construction of the Terminal Complex. The decision to approve the Terminal Complex is critical to consolidate Abu Dhabi’s position as a transport hub and tourist destination. Other approved schemes, such as the cultural projects on Saadiyat Island, are also integral in this strategy.

Within KPF’s master plan, the terminal is conceived as a gateway to the city. The design creates large, unimpeded internal zones that will enhance the passenger experience, and can accommodate long-term adaptability to industry demands. Uniquely engineered, long-span arches support a soaring roof and reach 50 metres at their highest point. Conversely, the internal scale of the departure hall endows the building with an openness that allows for meaningful connectivity between the outdoor landscaping and the indoor civic space.
