2020 Expo Dubai Austrian Pavilion Design
The Viennese architecture office querkraft prevailed its design for the Austrian Pavilion for the EXPO 2020 in Dubai. The design combines traditional building materials with modern techniques and presents Austria as a center of innovation in the heart of Europe.
A play of light and shadow invites the visitors to linger and explore:
The Expo in Dubai from October 20, 2020 to April 10, 2021, with its main topic of “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future” is the first world exhibition in an Arab country in the 170-year Expo history.
In dialogue with Austria
In a time where huge amounts of information create misleading answers for complex issues, the Austrian Pavilion focuses on the framework of innovations. Instead of giving answers, it concentrates on asking questions. The Austrian Pavilion provides the necessary space to engage in the dialogue about essential topics for a better world and a more empathic life together.
The Austrian Pavilion focuses on the question: “How can the given ressources be used more thoughtful and respectful in the future?”
Natural materials convey comfort. The grid of truncated cones unfolds playful asthetics of light and shadow. The carefully engineered arcs invite the visitor to rest and contemplate during the hectic of the surrounding exhibition.
querkraft
This Vienna-based architecture office has been in existence since 1998. Jakob Dunkl, Gerd Erhartt and Peter Sapp work with a team of around 40 staff.
querkraft defines its guiding principe as “giving people space”, which expresses a permanent striving for generosity in the design of spaces and for a freedom that allows the user to develop. querkraft is working on a variety of housing projects (a residential high rise in Paris, a project in Munich and some in Vienna), on the ‘Museum für konkrete Kunst und Design’ (Ingolstadt, GER), the first car-free, inner city IKEA furniture store (Vienna AUT) and on the Austrian-Pavillon for the Expo 2020 in Dubai.
The numerous awards won by querkraft include the “Prize for Architecture 2016” from the City of Vienna and the “design award 2018” of the Precast Concrete Institute (PCI) for the design of the facade of an industrial building in the USA.
