Solta Island Resort – Rotating Hotel Croatia

Studio RHE launches Europe’s first rotating hotel
Richard Hywel Evans of Studio RHE unveils radical new designs for Europe’s first rotating hotel. Built into a hillside olive grove on Solta Island, Croatia, the three-storey building will offer spectacular sea facing views for each room.

The new build marina and resort, just 35 minutes by boat from Split (2.5 hours flying time from London), rotates within the centre of an infinity-edged swimming lake that cascades down onto the hillside spa below. Guests will be treated to ever changing views over the Adriatic Sea, dramatic countryside and the Roman remains of a Diocletian fish farm.

The three-storey, 61m-diameter hotel will rotate at a speed of 1.3 times per day and contains a 22m static central hub including the reception, lifts and a circulation staircase. Guests will enter from below at Lower Ground level that does not rotate.

On the ridge overlooking the Marina, guests can enjoy private spaces in the Guest Pavilions made from the surrounding grove slate walls. The Pavilions are glass fronted and feature swimming pools roofed with reflective aluminium wings.

Four Bedroom Residences will be created from the perimeter ‘stone contour’ walls in the olive tree fields. The houses are a series of inter-connecting private spaces and feature glass encased trees rising from the swimming pool.

The new 120 berth Marina, with a Performance Stage, Yacht Club and Marine Village is designed to create a vibrant hub along the water’s edge. The development will also feature a dramatic acrylic connection beneath the bay linking the Sunset Beach Bar and Hillside Villas.

Richard Hywel Evans commented on the project: “We believe that this is a stunning example of how creative, exciting and bold design can and should be. We pride ourselves on integrating cutting edge design with the practical needs of each project site. In the case of Solta Island the need was simple; every guest should be able to enjoy the breathtaking view and our rotating design provides just that”.

Studio RHE was commissioned by Croatian Developer The Profectus Group who successfully developed the Croatia Boat Show and Property Show. The company owns 80km² of land north of Dubrovnik, and they are in the final phase of signing off the largest real estate project on the Adriatic coast.
