3XN Designed Bella Sky Hotel to be a New Landmark on Copenhagen Skyline

The opening of Scandinavia’s largest hotel symbolizes not only the identity of the modern Ørestad area of Copenhagen, but also marks the Capital’s increasing importance on the international convention and congress scene. The sculptural profile and visibility of the hotel from the various corners of Copenhagen make it an architectural landmark which will draw many visitors to the Ørestad neighbourhood.

With its 814 rooms and 30 conference rooms, the Comwell Bella Sky Hotel offers a wealth of new accommodation and resources for the Bella Convention and Congress Center in Copenhagen. In future this will draw an even larger segment of the international world class conferences and events to Copenhagen. 3XN has designed the Bella Sky Hotel to create a distinct new profile on the Copenhagen skyline, with the two towers reaching up 76,5 meters, and leaning out at a staggering 15 degrees in each direction (11 degrees more than the leaning tower of Pisa). This results in a sculptural building unique in Copenhagen which has started drawing many curious looks from all over the city.

A New Symbol for Ørestad, Copenhagen’s Newest Neighbourhood

‘We have knowingly worked towards designing a building unlike anything else in Copenhagen – And we did that because Ørestad, which is a new city neighbourhood is also unlike any other place in Copenhagen. Bella Sky is designed specifically to reflect the identity of Ørestad, contributing in a positive manner,’ says Kim Herforth Nielsen, Principal and Founder of 3XN.

3XN has also designed a large portion of the interior, and in that regard has aimed to differentiate itself from other hotels.

Mr. Nielsen goes on to say, ‘Most international convention hotels have a formal and impersonal style. We wanted to address this by doing the opposite. We designed the interior of Bella Sky in a style reminiscent of a tasteful Scandinavian home with warmth, light and connection to nature.’

The Director of Bella Center, Mr. Arne Bang Mikkelsen is delighted that the newest addition to the Bella Congress and Convention Center is more than just the sum of its parts. He says, ‘We have received an architectural icon, a symbol for Bella Center and for Copenhagen, which through its unique form provides people with an experience, both from the outside as they approach the hotel and on the inside as they experience the many facilities and amenities offered. The Hotel is so sculptural, that we have decided not to add any signage on the exterior. The architecture speaks for itself.’ At the same time, the Director, Arne Bang Mikkelsen mentions that the collaboration with 3XN architects was ‘perfect.’

All Rooms with a View

The characteristic leaning towers are designed with purpose. The fact that they lean away from each other ensures optimal guest views from both sides of each tower over the nature park ‘Amager Common’ and the Copenhagen rooftops just beyond.

‘Some of the best views can be found in Ørestad, and therefore it was important to find an architectural solution which allows views from nearly every room. The effect of the leaning towers has also resulted in corner rooms where the building angles create a view which is actually underneath the room! It gives the illusion of floating above the view itself,’ says Kim Herforth Nielsen. ‘Of course, the most fantastic view of all is from the Hotel’s Skybar which is open to the public!’

The Comwell Bella Sky Hotel will be opened on Monday, May 16th by Brian Mikkelsen, the Danish Minister of Business and Economic Affairs, and Frank Jensen, the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen.

Bella Sky ready to launch in 6 months

Right now the construction of the Bella Sky hotel in Copenhagen is the largest building site in Denmark. In only 6 months Bella Sky will open as one of Scandinavia’s largest and most spectacular hotels

Visually the hotel will be characterized by the two leaning towers, creating a spectacular and unspoiled view over the green meadows, the sea and the Copenhagen skyline.

The two towers incline 15 degrees – by comparison the leaning tower in Pisa leans at an angle of 3.97 degrees – amounting to a staggering 20 meter slope difference between the ground and top floor. In order to accommodate such working conditions special fitters were trained to abseil down the building to mount the façade.

The unique design creates diversity at almost every floor level and thereby challenges the scopes for conventional construction. The complexity of Bella Sky reflects not only the great engineering and constructional achievements, but also the architectural ambition to create a unique and personal hotel experience.

Inside the hotel will accommodate the luxurious feel of a four star hotel with interior inspired by the Scandinavian design tradition. Due to the complex architecture hotel guests will find more than 200 room variants, which contribute to creating an individual, exclusive and warm atmosphere – and facilitate new hotel experiences again and again.

The spectacular design makes Bella Sky a unique landmark. At the resent topping-out ceremony the Danish Minister for Economic and Business Affairs, Brian Mikkelsen and Copenhagen City Mayor, Frank Jensen complimented the architectural vision and pointed to Bella Sky’s great significance for the Ørestad region and Copenhagen as a whole.

Accommodating 814 rooms, 32 conference rooms, 3 restaurants, lounge, a sky bar and a 850 m2 wellness centre the hotel will meet the wishes of a much needed extension to the Bella Centre Conference facilities and prepare Copenhagen to host large international events in the future.

The spectacular four star hotel will open in May 2011.

Ambitious hotel marks Copenhagen on the international conference scene

Recently proclaimed best city in the world to live in by Monocle, a leading lifestyle magazine, and hosting the upcoming COP15, United Nations Climate Change Conference 2009, Copenhagen insists on challenging much bigger world cities on the metropolis turf. The ambitious and spectacular Bella Hotel will cement Copenhagen’s dawning position as a natural centre of international events.

Bella Sky Hotel is the largest building work initiated in Denmark in 2008 and will be one of the largest hotels in Scandinavia. Its location ensures direct access to the international conference and exhibition venue, Bella Center, Copenhagen Airport and the historical Copenhagen city centre.

Bella Hotel will be a unique landmark of Copenhagen’s new urban area, Ørestad. During the next months two hotel towers of 76,5 meters will raise to the sky, inclining in opposite directions with facades breaking off during the rise. In this way both variation, a dynamic shape and an unobstructed view from all rooms of the green meadows and the sea is obtained. Top twist of one of the towers decreases problems with turbulence in the flat, windy landscape, and a ground floor twist of the other makes room for a clearly indicated entrance. The hotel lobby is merged into the existing entrance lobby of the Bella Center, making the hotel a true integrated part of the complex.

The four star Bella Hotel will accommodate all modern conveniences in 814 rooms, 32 conference rooms, 3 restaurants, sky bar, wellness etc. The foundation stone to Bella Hotel was laid September 17, and the first phase will be completed in spring 2011.
