Changing the Face 2013 Competition – Redesign of the ‘Rotunda’ building in Warsaw incorporates innovation and urban space in perfect harmony

December 2013 – The winners of the 7th International Changing the Face architectural competition were announced today by competition organizers DuPont, PKO Bank Polski, Association of Polish Architects and the Polish Branch of the Green Building Council. The contest objective was to design the renovation of the Rotunda building in Warsaw, one of the city’s contemporary symbols, taking into account strict guidelines, including a design for cultural activities and an urban space open to the public within the building itself. The projects had to be conceived considering the usage of DuPont materials such as DuPont™ Corian® high-tech surfaces, DuPont™ Tyvek® breather building membranes, DuPont™ Plantex® landscaping geotextiles, DuPont™ Teflon® paints and DuPont™ SentryGlas® interlayers for laminated safety glass.

The jury* unanimously agreed that the first place winner, whose design will be realized, is the project from the Polish Cracow-based Gowin-Suita team of architects. The winning design met all the criteria set in the contest, maintaining the form of the Rotunda building in a manner which is faithful

to its original state, while defining an architectural and urban space of the greatest possible functional use and aesthetic standards. PKO Bank Polska plans to start negotiations with the winners on the implementation of the design this year.

“The winning design will ensure the sustainability of the original Rotunda, while creating a modern building for the PKO Bank Polska and the community,” said Włodzimierz Soboń, Strategic Program Manager at DuPont. “The use of innovative solutions, such as DuPont™ SentryGlas® and DuPont™ Corian® means that the building’s transparency will be securely restored, and the building’s façade will receive a new shine, while potentially leading to sustainable construction certificates,” continued Soboń.

The Rotunda is a cultural landmark in Warsaw and in recognition of this, PKO Bank Polski decided to allocate a part of the Rotunda building to urban or public use. During public consultations held in April and May 2013, more than 10,000 completed questionnaires by Warsaw residents were submitted with suggestions for use of the urban space within the Rotunda. The consultation results were reflected in the report, which became a requirement for all contest participants. The contest aroused global interest on the part of architects throughout the world. 1040 teams from 79 countries were registered and 214 projects were received. 10 finalists were selected for the second stage.

More details on the winning design

• The paving of the square incorporates regular grid divisions that extend to the street and provide a visual frame to highlight the bank.
• Appealing greenery is included on the side.
• The original “ceiling lighting” system for the square creates the sensation of urban interior scaled coziness, and provides a feeling of continuity by keeping the same height as that of the shelters in the neighbouring Wiecha passage.

• The banking functions in the revitalized Rotunda building will be positioned on the ground floor and in the basement.
• An “Urban Saloon” on the entirety of the building’s first floor will hold the public space function. The almost 500 m2 of space will enable Warsaw residents’ ideas – submitted during the public consultations – to be implemented, including:
o a multimedia information point about cultural events,
o a place to relax or meet,
o a free art gallery,
o and a cafeteria.

DuPont launches “Changing the Face 2013” architectural competition

Warsaw, June 4 2013 – DuPont, in cooperation with PKO Bank Polski, the Union of Polish Architects (SARP), the Polish Green Building Council, and Architizer.com, announces the seventh edition of the “Changing the Face” international architectural competition, which will be focussed on an architectural project in Poland, the Rotunda building in Warsaw.

The competition calls for innovative designs to revitalize Warsaw’s Rotunda building, to provide a new and sustainable face for Central Europe’s largest bank (PKO Bank Polski). While previous editions of this competition were theoretical, the innovation of this year is that the winning design of the competition will actually be built!

The Rotunda building in Warsaw, Poland, as it is today. “Changing the Face” international architectural competition requests innovative ideas for the remake of the “face” and the interiors of the building.

The PKO Rotunda is the iconic focal point of Zbigniew Karpiński’s 1962-69 urban complex in central Warsaw. Located at the junction of two major streets, the Rotunda is a well-known city landmark and a favorite local meeting place. The building is a historically significant part of the city’s 20th-century urban fabric. The redesign of the highly symbolic structure is an unrivaled opportunity to bring a contemporary update to a major modern landmark.

The concept for the “Changing the Face” competitions was first proposed in 2008 within a workshop dedicated to the Colosseum in Rome, and later developed in iconic buildings in the cities of Bucharest, Prague, Zagreb, Athens and Moscow. In every city, architects were asked to work on a challenging public building selected by DuPont in collaboration with local institutions.

Beyond maintaining the historic qualities of Rotunda building, the revitalisation is planned to be certified with two out three systems – LEED, BREEM or DGNB. An additional condition set by the organisers is the use of at least three DuPont materials, from DuPont™ Corian® advanced surface for exterior cladding to DuPont™ SentryGlas® and DuPont™ SentryGlas® Expressions™ high performance interlayers for structural and decorative laminated glass, from DuPont™ Tyvek® advanced membranes for the building envelope to DuPont™ Teflon® architectural fabrics and surface protections for decorative coatings and DuPont™ Plantex® root barrier and plant protection solutions.
