Cancer Research and Treatment Centre

Based in Bogotá and due for completion in 2020, it will incorporate a research centre and develop a unique care model to cater for the needs of the patients and their families

The Spanish architecture firm Rafael de La-Hoz Arquitectos won the ‘Future Healthy Built Environment Project’ award at the Design and Health World Congress held in Vienna for the design of the Cancer Research and Treatment Centre in Bogotá (Colombia). The award recognizes projects in design or under construction that acknowledge “the changing role of the built environment in relation to health and wellbeing of people or local community.”

The Cancer Research and Treatment Centre, co-designed by Rafael de La-Hoz Arquitectos and the Colombian firm Construcciones Planificadas, is expected to launch in 2020 and will offer 230 hospital beds, a hotel for the families of the patients and its own research centre in a 100,000-square meters site. It will gather the most innovative techniques for cancer treatment and diagnosis, a centre to search for its cure and spaces specifically designed to make the much-needed family support easier.

For Gerardo Mingo, Business Development Manager at Rafael de La-Hoz Arquitectos, who collected the award at the closing gala of the congress organized by the International Academy for Design and Health, “this accolade is a great stimulus for our hospital architecture practice and endorses a project with a layout shaped like an extended hand and a design that revolves around three basic elements: efficiency, light and silence.”

In 2014, another hospital built by the studio, the King Juan Carlos University Hospital in Móstoles (Madrid), received the International Award for ‘Architectural Quality in health buildings’, by the Spanish Hospital Architecture and Engineering Association (AADAIH) and the International Hospital Engineering Federation (IFHE).
