A glass platform at the top of a cliff, the largest of its kind in Asia, is nearing completion in Wulong National Geological Park in Chongqing City, southwest China. It is due to open in October.
The hanging platform – 11m wide and 26m long – stands 280m above Karst Valley in Wulong National Geological Park. The glass platform will provide tourists with a breathtaking panoramic view of the landscape under their feet.
The park boasts three naturally-formed stone bridges, the largest such complex in Asia. In addition, it also has sinkholes, cliffs, caves and other Karst landforms. The project was designed and planned by a team of 20. It will be made from three layers of toughened glass, a single pane is able to bear a maximum weight of 10 tonnes.
The project comes in response to the changing taste of tourists, as many are bored with “conventional sightseeing”. The platform is due to open to the public before the upcoming week-long National Day holiday. According to Chinese news website en.people.cn, the structure was designed by 20 architects from around the globe.
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, a UNESCO world heritage site featuring pillar-like peak formations in Hunan Province, central China, replaced its rickety wooden-plank road that hugged the edge of a cliff with a similar glass structure in April 2014. The 1,500m-long “road of the brave” had attracted over 4.3 million visitors up to the end of March this year.
