The Dow Diamond Centre, a distinctive new facility designed by Lemay in close collaboration with York Construction, welcomed its first occupants this month in Fort Saskatchewan. The building creates an architectural landmark and provides a functional, efficient workplace for up to 200 staff.
The Dow Diamond Centre reflects Dow’s established brand through a design that considers both ground-level and aerial visibility. Juxtaposing the relationship between the earth and Alberta’s big prairie skies, the geometrical composition of this hub’s precast concrete and glass curtain walls boldly references Dow’s iconic logo’s diamond shape in its massing.
The layout accommodates a mix of focused and collaborative workspaces,
enabling efficient day-to-day administrative and site-support activities. Shared spaces are designed to encourage coordination across teams while maintaining a practical environment.
Situated at the edge of a broader expansion and retrofit of a brownfield site dating back to 1961, the flagship structure of the Dow Diamond Centre and its accompanying Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) Centre occupy two opposite corners of a 25-acre lot 45 minutes north of Edmonton along Highway 15. Together, these facilities serve ongoing operations and future needs of Dow’s Fort Saskatchewan site. With designs informed by sustainable building philosophies, these structures support Dow’s decarbonization project to build the world’s first net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions integrated ethylene cracker and derivatives facility.
“Our hope is that the Dow Diamond Centre and MRO buildings will take on a life of their own and serve as an iconic gateway to the site. Working alongside Dow and Lemay, this project represents the kind of collaboration we value most: bold design, precise execution, and a shared commitment to building something that will serve Dow’s people for decades to come,” – John Crawley, President of York Construction Inc.
The purpose-built Diamond Centre combines Dow’s workplace standards with a focus on safety, energy efficiency, and employee wellbeing. Its activity-based layout provides a mix of focused and collaborative workspaces, enabling efficient day-to-day administrative and site-support activities. The interiors embrace the structure’s angularity while incorporating homages to the surrounding landscape’s panoramas through sightlines that evoke the
horizon. Calm colour palettes, textures and materials form a monochromatic base strategically punctuated by Dow’s bold red for accents and wayfinding.
Shared spaces—including multiple conference rooms, a large auditorium, fitness and commissary facilities, outdoor dining, and a centrepiece common area—are designed to encourage coordination across teams and bring people together while maintaining a practical, durable environment for administrative and industrial accommodations.
“It’s truly gratifying when you get to be part of a team that is completely united in the desire to innovate at every opportunity. So many thoughtful contributors, including York Construction, worked tirelessly to create enduring, impactful workspaces for Dow’s staff and visitors, while navigating design challenges collaboratively,” says Grace Coulter Sherlock, Senior Partner, Western Canada & Ontario.
