Bennett’s Road House, St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada
Bennett’s Road House was designed for a family of three, this major renovation and addition began with a cherished cabin originally built by the owner’s grandfather. Nestled beside a quiet pond near what is now the City of St. John’s, the cabin held deep sentimental value. Rather than starting anew, the family chose to honor their heritage by making the original structure the heart of their new home.
To strengthen the connection between the cabin and its natural surroundings, the original layout was reimagined. The roof was removed and replaced to introduce a vaulted ceiling, flooding the interior with light and creating a sense of openness.
A new kitchen was added in place of the former exterior deck, and large windows along with an open staircase were incorporated to enhance views and circulation. Remarkably, all existing wood framing and the foundation were preserved and reused, maintaining the integrity of the original build.
New additions were thoughtfully placed on the side opposite the pond-facing elevation. These include a garage with an office and guest suite above—designed to accommodate extended family visits and potentially serve as a future residence for aging parents. Adjacent to the garage, a woodworking shop was constructed, connected by an exterior deck that extends from the guest suite. This deck also provides a covered outdoor workspace, blending functionality with comfort.
A new central entrance was created via a staircase that bridges the new two-storey addition with the existing split-level cabin, seamlessly integrating old and new.
Adding a personal touch, one of the homeowners crafted nearly all of the interior millwork and built-ins. The cabinetry and interior stairs were custom-built onsite in the new woodshop, making the home not only a tribute to family history but also a showcase of craftsmanship and care.
