Orms completes ‘Alpha Works’ co-working hub in central Birmingham
Orms has completed the refurbishment of a new high-specification co-working space in the centre of Birmingham for CEG. Located on the 21st and 22nd floors of the iconic 28-storey Alpha Tower, Alpha Works caters for the booming demand for flexible, collaborative and alternative work spaces in the region.
Using their innovative East-London flair, Orms has carefully redesigned the space to create a strong characterful workplace, which will also play host to curated events and exhibitions. It has employed a simple and effectual mix of materials, using warm woods and muted colours to contrast with the existing exposed concrete and services to create an element of raw sophistication.
Reception and breakout areas have been designed to capture a degree of transparency into all spaces, and modernised to create welcoming areas to meet, work and socialise.
The integrity of the modernist tower has been retained and renewed to create light and spacious contemporary office space, befitting the building’s creative heritage. Orms’ design has redefined the workspace’s outlook on the city, maximising the view whilst providing essential natural light. Collectively, this has resulted in a vibrant, thriving working environment which encourages a sense of community that is comfortable, adaptable as well as intrinsically inspiring.
Melanie Martin, Associate at Orms commented:
“The challenge was to create a prototype for a regional serviced office that would sit alongside traditionally tenanted spaces and exist as more than just an office. The aspiration was to create a space that would allow connectivity and a strong sense of community by proving clients with a variety of flexible, adaptable spaces that allow inhabitation and interaction beyond defined ‘office’ space.
Alpha Works has been designed to ensure it provides an organisational structure which is both functional and experiential, maximising the abundance of natural light and views across Birmingham’s city.”
Theresa White, community manager at Alpha Works, said:
“Alpha Works is an exciting first for CEG in response to the market’s increasing call for flexible, collaborative and alternative work spaces. To tap into Birmingham’s current economic renaissance, we have invested in a space that drives further creativity and discovery. Bringing such an iconic building back to life has been incredible and the feedback we’ve had has been hugely positive.”
Originally design by Seifert & Partners, Alpha Tower was part of the Associated Television (ATV) studio complex. English Heritage have described it as ‘one of the most aesthetically successful office buildings in Birmingham with a shaped outline and careful detailing giving it a dynamic forcefulness.’
The tower has recently been acquired by CEG who are investing £10 million to refurbish the Grade II listed building and create a regional prototype for serviced offices. It now provides 196,000 sq ft of exceptional office accommodation over 27 floors with unrivalled views across the city. As the areas adjacent to Alpha Works are undergoing vast redevelopment, it is fast becoming a desirable and renowned business district, complete with shops, restaurants and excellent transport links.
