SCI-Arc Distinguished Alumni Awards
Los Angeles, CA (Oct. 7, 2009)-Architects Barbara Bestor and Jennifer Siegal are being honored for their significant contributions to the design and architecture professions by the Alumni Association of the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc).
SCI-Arc Distinguished Alumni Awards in 2009
Bestor, founder of Barbara Bestor Architecture, and Siegal, founder and principal of Office of Mobile Design, will be recognized at the Association’s 8th Annual Main Event on Nov. 5 at Inner-City Arts in Downtown Los Angeles. Both women graduated in the 1990s from SCI-Arc, an independent architecture school which has developed an international reputation for its innovative approaches to design.
Siegal is best known for her work in designing sustainable pre-fabricated housing. She earned a master’s degree from SCI-Arc in 1994 and was a 2003 Loeb Fellow at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, where she explored the use of intelligent, kinetic and lightweight materials. Her work has been exhibited in the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Triennial; the Walker Art Center’s “Strangely Familiar: Design and Everyday Life”; the NY “Mobile Living” exhibition; and the National Building Museum’s “The Green House, New Directions in Sustainable Architecture and Design.”
In 2007, Country School, the first green prefab school, was recognized as one of the five best buildings in Los Angeles. She is the inaugural Julius Shulman Institute Fellow at Woodbury University, the editor of both Mobile: the Art of Portable Architecture (2002), More Mobile: Portable Architecture for Today (2008), and was founder and former series editor of Materials Monthly (2005-6), all published by Princeton Architectural Press. A monograph on Siegal was published in 2005. This year she was honored by the USA Network with a “Character Approved Award” as an innovator shaping American culture.
Bestor’s architecture practice has included award-winning commercial spaces such as Intelligentsia Coffee in Silverlake and experimental houses in Venice, Silverlake, Santa Barbara and New York City. She graduated with a master’s in architecture from SCI-Arc in 1992, and also holds a degree in visual and environmental studies from Harvard. She is a former professor at both of those institutions as well as UCLA.
Her work has been exhibited in LA Project Space, the CCA Wattis Institute and the Whitney Biennial in Central Park, and it has been published in the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Dwell, Elle, Brutus and Domino. She is currently the chair of the new Graduate School of Architecture at Woodbury University. Bestor is also the author of “Bohemian Modern, Living in Silverlake” (Harper Collins, 2006), dedicated to the informal and eccentric modernism found in Silverlake’s architectural history.
The Distinguished Alumni Awards will be presented to Bestor and to Siegal at the Alumni Association’s annual scholarship fundraising event from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5. The theme of the evening is Casino Night, and it will feature a silent auction of sketches by architects as well as casino-style games.
The site of the event, Inner-City Arts at 720 Kohler Street, is an award-winning learning facility designed by Michael Maltzan and Nancy Goslee Power.
