THE CHICAGO ATHENAEUM ANNOUNCES
THE 2009 INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE AWARDS

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, OCTOBER 15 2008. The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design in association with Metropolitan Arts Press Ltd. and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies are organizing the 2009 edition of the “International Architecture Awards®” as a way in which to honor the most outstanding contemporary architecture designed and built throughout the world.

The International Architecture Awards are the only global Awards Program in architecture of its kind, which was conceived and presented by the Museum and in partnership with The European Center for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies to give an important overview of design and architecture on a world scale.

The program is organized and curated by the Finnish architecture journalist and critic, Christian K. Narkiewicz-Laine.

The deadline for 2009 submissions is 1 Dec 2008.

Last year, hundreds of submissions for this awards program were received from the best and most renowned design firms in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas. The submissions ranged from new corporate headquarters, skyscrapers, institutions, sports and transportation facilities, airports, urban planning projects, sacred spaces, and private residences and multi-family housing designed by architects in their countries of origin or abroad for both built and unbuilt projects alike.
In 2008, one hundred and ten (110) projects in thirty-eight (38) nations were selected by a distinguished jury organized in New York at the New York Chapter/American Institute of Architects and by noted American architectural practitoners serving

as jury members. The awarded buildings and planning projects are exhibited in an inaugural exhibition in Florence Italy (November 2008) and the exhibition is scheduled to travel to other European locations in 2008-2009. The 2008 award winners can be seen at the Museum’s website at www.chi-athenaeum.org or at The European Centre’s website at www.europeanarch.eu. For 2009, the awards program considers new corporate headquarters, skyscrapers, institutions, sports and transportation facilities, interiors, urban planning projects, airports, and residences for awards, designed by architects in their countries of origin or abroad for both built and unbuilt projects alike, as of January 1, 2006.

The 2009 jury for awards is scheduled to take place in Europe with noted European architectural practitioners and architecture journalists serving as jury members. The awarded projects and other selected buildings will form an exhibition that is scheduled for an international tour in 2008-2009.

The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design founded “The International Architecture Awards” as a way in which to draw significant international attention to new buildings and planning projects being built and designed worldwide by the best international architecture offices and firms. The program has a unique educational mission and public profile with the intent of promoting and celebrating new world architecture to a international audience of developers, real-estate executives, corporate business, design professionals, and the general public.

Entry forms are available on line at www. chi-athenaeum.org or at www.europeanarch.eu.

The International Architecture Awards for 2008

David Chipperfield Architects’ Museum of Modern Literature has won a 2008 International Architecture Award for the best new global design. The Awards are organised annually by The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design. The jury commented: “David Chipperfield’s Museum of Modern Literature combines modernism and classicism with reductive clarity, embodied in materials that give architectural language a calm, sensual yet highly physical presence.”

The Museum of Modern Literature is located in Marbach’s scenic park, on top of a rock plateau overlooking the valley of the Neckar River. As the birthplace of the dramatist Friedrich Schiller, the town’s park already held the National Schiller Museum, built in 1903, and the Archive for German Literature, built in the 1970s. Displaying artefacts from the extensive 20th century collection from the Archive for German Literature, notably the original manuscripts of Franz Kafka’s “The Trial” and Alfred Döblin’s “Berlin Alexanderplatz”, the museum also provides panoramic views across and over the distant landscape.

Embedded in the topography, the museum reveals different elevations depending on the viewpoint. By utilising the steep slope of the site, terraces allow for the creation of very different characters. An intimate, shaded entrance on the brow of the hill facing the National Schiller Museum with its forecourt and park, and a grander, more open series of tiered spaces facing the valley below. A pavilion-like volume is located on the highest terrace, providing the entrance to the museum.

The interiors of the museum reveal themselves as one descends down through the loggia, foyer and staircase spaces, preparing the visitor for the dark timber-panelled exhibition galleries, illuminated only by artificial light due to fragility and sensitivity of the works on display. At the same time, each of these environmentally controlled spaces borders onto a naturally lit gallery, balancing views inward to the composed, internalized world of texts and manuscripts with the green and scenic valley on the other side of the glass. A clearly defined material concept using solid materials (fair-faced concrete, sandblasted reconstituted stone with limestone aggregate, limestone, wood, felt and glass) gives the calm, rational architectural language a sensual physical presence.

The International Architecture Awards honour the best, new significant buildings and landscape and planning projects designed and/or built around the world by the most important architects, landscape architects and urban planners practising nationally and internationally. Almost 1,000 projects were entered, with 114 of them receiving an award.

The Chicago Athenaeum, together with the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design, and Urban Studies will present a special exhibition of all awarded buildings at the SESV Santa Verdiana in Florence, and The European Centre’s new “Contemporary Space Athens”.

This year, the Museum received nearly 1,000 projects for new buildings, landscape architecture, and urban planning from the most important firms practising globally.

The 2008 Jury for the Awards was held in New York and the awarded projects for 2008 were selected by a distinguished group of American architects and educators under the auspices of The New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

A full list of the winning projects for 2008 can be viewed at our Museum’s website at www.chi-athenaeum.org (Ed. when we checked the list wasn’t visible)

On October 30, 2008, The Chicago Athenaeum, together with the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies will present a special exhibition of all awarded buildings at the SESV Santa Verdiana in Florence, Italy.
