St Philip’s Central Australian Discovery Centre – Alice Springs Building
The Central Australian Discovery Centre at St Philip’s College in Alice Springs is a purpose-built, contemporary learning facility designed to strengthen connection, curiosity, and engagement in education within a unique desert context. Developed by DesignInc, the project forms a key part of the school’s broader master plan, reinforcing its vision of providing an adventurous, future-focused education grounded in place, culture, and community.
More than just an academic building, the Centre operates as a dynamic hub for collaboration and exploration. It is designed around flexible learning environments that support a wide range of teaching and learning styles, from traditional classroom delivery to hands-on, project-based discovery.
Spaces are open, adaptable, and highly connected, enabling students and educators to move fluidly between learning zones and encouraging interaction, teamwork, and creativity.
A strong emphasis is placed on connection to Country and the surrounding Central Australian landscape. Natural light, expansive views, and material selections inspired by the desert environment help embed the building within its context. Outdoor learning spaces and informal gathering areas further extend learning beyond the classroom, reinforcing a relationship between environment and education.
Cultural identity is also central to the design, with Indigenous perspectives integrated through spatial planning, naming, and storytelling elements such as yarning circle-inspired gathering spaces. This creates a learning environment that acknowledges heritage while fostering inclusivity and respect.
Sustainability is embedded throughout, with passive design strategies, shading, natural ventilation, and energy-efficient systems responding to the harsh climate. These features not only reduce environmental impact but also support comfort and wellbeing for occupants.
Overall, the Discovery Centre provides a forward-thinking educational environment that blends culture, climate responsiveness, and innovative pedagogy to inspire students to explore, connect, and discover their place in the world.
