OVI Profile – Office for Visual Interaction
At Office for Visual Interaction (OVI), we are more than lighting designers–we are philosophers, storytellers and tailors who identify the essence of a project and craft our designs into vivid architectural icons. Our mission is to design and produce legacy-worthy masterpieces that radiate not just with light, but with rich narratives that thoroughly understand a project’s position in society and time. We see light as more than a tool; its interaction with surfaces and materials tells an emotional tale, providing depth and structure to a space. Every project is a new opportunity to communicate an idea.

We seek to nurture and further the union of daylight and design. We believe the sensations that lighting stirs are inseparable from the space itself; it is as elemental to architecture as glasswork. We absorb location-specific details, exacting technical specifications, textured facades–every factor and concept that forms the complete project–in order to divine the essence of the overall vision.

In both breadth and scope, OVI’s portfolio is vast and inclusive, comprising intimate, humble installations and iconic, larger than life works–each approached with equal passion and humanity. Our designs and products discover and emphasize stories as dynamically composed visual soundtracks that underscore and invigorate architectural masterpieces. The stories that shape our work advance the industry while honoring and echoing the ideas of the past, memorializing and progressing the quintessence of a place, a people, an era.

As architectural lighting designers we extract, refine and strengthen the design making any location exceptional. With bold thinking and hidden logic, we provide one-of-a-kind concept and lighting ideation, daylight analysis, photometric calculations, drawings, specifications and luminaire schedules. Our integrated design solutions and detailed coordination provide a sophisticated aesthetic, creating an iconic, emotional, and holistic expression of light.

Key Lighting Designs by Office for Visual Interaction
The interior lighting is a significant supporting design element of this flagship store. A customized lighting solution will enhance the visitor experience via a daylight assist system, accentuating the connection between exterior and interior as well as providing specifically targeted light to the interior trees and product tables.

Each element of the store shall receive the appropriate illumination supporting its concept. Spot lights on the trees will create dappled light at the Grove and around the Cube daylight assist at the stretched fabric ceiling will provide ambient light whilst relating to natural light entering the space from above, focused light from spot lights within the illuminated rings will emphasize products on display tables, similar to the accessories highlighted at the Avenues.
Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, NY, USA
2008
Positioned on a bluff overlooking the Hudson River, the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) builds on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s heritage of technological leadership.
Rensselaer’s research groups include the Lighting Research Center, a nexus of independent expertise on the latest LED lighting research. Inspired by the institute’s spirit of innovation, the new facility is illuminated with state-of-the-art technology.

From competition entry to reality, this multi-building campus is a 3-dimensional, parametric sculpture located in Riyadh. Envisioned as a modern crystal in the desert, lighting creates the central focal point of the project’s nighttime identity, glowing and softly radiating throughout the site.
The site is a virtual micro-city, exceeding 500,000 m2 characterized by its innovative design, featuring a series of interlocking, cellular structures that include an Office Building, Conference Center, Library, IT Center and Place of Worship, as well as shaded outdoor spaces, courtyards and gardens, woven together by an open-air central plaza.

Making its Manhattan debut in 2013, the revolutionary LED streetlight for New York City is being officially implemented throughout the metropolitan area.

Conceived as a one-to-one replacement for the ubiquitous 250-watt high-pressure sodium Cobra Head, introduced over fifty years ago, the highly-anticipated LED streetlight is now the new standard in the Department of Transportation’s street-lighting catalogue.

The Perot Museum of Nature and Science, conceived as an immersive, curiosity-stimulating environment, resides in Victory Park within the heart of the Arts District in uptown Dallas.
The lighting design, by Office for Visual Interaction, reinforces the overall themes of the project, emphasizing the dynamic juxtaposition between the natural and man-made environments and the exploration of unexpected spatial relationships.

Conceived by Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW), the glass and steel skyscraper is draped with a lace-like screen of thin ceramic tubes, creating an airy façade that reflects subtle changes in natural light throughout the day.

The Rookery, 209 S LaSalle Street, Chicago, IL 60604, United States
2011
Completed in 1888, The Rookery is one of the greatest surviving examples of early commercial skyscrapers.
For over a century, the building’s distinctive dark red masonry facades have been unlit, making it visually “disappear” at night.
Now, lighting softly activates the intricate masonry carving, creating a subtle presence of brightness, shadow, and contrast that renders the building visible without overpowering it with light.

A coherent lighting masterplan unifies the nighttime appearance of the Parliament’s various buildings, while customized lighting solutions blend with its lively architecture.
United States Air Force Memorial, 1 Air Force Memorial Drive, Arlington, VA 22204, United States of America
2006
Situated on a promontory overlooking the Pentagon, the United States Air Force Memorial takes its place in the ranks of the capital city’s key monuments. Lighting is an essential aspect of establishing the nighttime identity of each of these structures.
At the Air Force Memorial, three stainless-steel spires evoke the precision and weightlessness of flight. Illuminated with a variation in intensity, the sweeping curves of the arcs are accentuated, and their tips brilliantly lit. Illumination appears to emanate from within the monument itself, caressing the slender forms and bursting into the night sky.
