Stationsplein bicycle parking facility Amsterdam Central Station
8th February 2023 – Amsterdam’s newest bicycle parking is not just underground, but also submerged under water. At the end of January, the new Stationsplein bicycle parking facility at the front of Amsterdam Central Station is opened to the public. For the architects of wUrck this moment marked the end of the five-year project.
An underground parking facility can be discouraging for its users, according to Oriol Casas Cancer, wUrck architect and partner. “That is why we have paid particular attention to user comfort and ensured that our building is a spacious and well-oiled machine. For example, the main path of the bicycle parking is designed as a ‘street’ and is directly connected to the metro and the station.”
Above the new facility the channel boats have their permanent moorings. They arrive and sail off loaded with curious tourists. Underneath the enormous water surface the bicycle parking celebrates water and Amsterdam. With its rough exterior made of basalt and natural stone and a sleek light interior, the bicycle parking compared by Oriol to an oyster which buried itself in the silt.
It is easy to navigate through the new bicycle parking. The curved wall – called the Horizon – has a glass front with city maps from the city origins to the present time. These city maps are made of small art images: photos and paintings that emphasize the connection between Amsterdam and the water. This theme continues in the Oculi – the round lighting fixtures in the ceiling above the main path (the colonnade). Both the Horizon and the Oculi give the user a sense of orientation. wUrck worked closely with the Amsterdam Museum on selecting these images and turning them into maps.
The renovation of the station square in the front of Amsterdam CS started in 2018. This large-scale project concluded with the opening of the Stationsplein bicycle parking. In addition to the design of the new facility (which was carried out by contractor Max Bögl), wUrck was also asked to supervise the architectural components of the entire entrance area, including several bridges. Oriol expresses the feeling that the project team has: “As wUrck we are proud to have been able to participate in this great project. After all, the entrance of the central station gives an important first impression of the city of Amsterdam.”
