The National Holodomor-Genocide Museum Building in Kyiv, Ukraine
Each year, at the end of November, Ukraine commemorates the victims of the Holodomor, the Great Famine of 1932–1933, which claimed the lives of millions of Ukrainians. Responding to the need to honour this tragedy, Nizio Design International developed both the architectural concept and the permanent exhibition for the National Holodomor-Genocide Museum in Kyiv, one of the most significant museum projects dedicated to this period. Construction, which began several years ago and has been ongoing since 2018, was halted by the war unfolding on Ukrainian soil and still awaits continuation.
The Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Holodomor and Political Repressions has become an occasion not only for reflection on Ukraine’s tragic past, but also for drawing attention to contemporary initiatives dedicated to commemorating the victims of the Great Famine. A central role among these initiatives is the construction of the National Holodomor Museum in Kyiv, whose architectural vision is co-authored by Nizio Design International under the direction of Mirosław Nizio. Developed in cooperation with the Ukrainian studio Project Systems LTD, the concept seeks to merge the symbolism of Ukrainian land with the imperative to present historical facts. Through both the building’s form and the scenography of the exhibition, the project brings to light testimonies long obscured by decades of silence and erasure.
The museum building has been designed as an integral part of the landscape of the Dnipro Valley, near the Pechersk Lavra monastic complex, harmoniously embedded within the slope’s tectonics. A prominent compositional axis connects the viewing terrace with the existing memorial, creating a symbolic line of narration about Ukraine’s difficult past and present.
Architectural Concept
The building’s form embodies the metaphor of “revealing the truth.” The partial displacement of the roof and its distinctive incision symbolize the act of exposing a concealed history. A monumental entrance leads visitors into the depth of the earth, where architecture and exhibition scenography together evoke the structure of the black soil—fertile ground that is also the resting place of the victims.
With a total usable area of nearly 14,000 m² and over 3,500 m² of exhibition space, the museum features entrances at both ends of the compositional axis: from the memorial side and from the viewing terrace, which is connected by a bridge. The area in front of the entrance is intended as a ceremonial plaza, emphasizing the monumental character of the museum.
The architectural concept integrates references to nature, the symbolism of Ukrainian land, and a historical narrative. Soil that once nurtured life now bears witness to tragedy, holding the memory of millions of victims. Vegetation on the roofs and subtle seasonal changes in the colour of the grasses serve as a reminder that the truth about the Holodomor must never be forgotten.
Nizio Design International is responsible for co-authoring the architectural design of the building, developing the main exhibition concept and design, and providing advisory support during construction and author supervision. The project received positive feedback from UNESCO consultants and was planned to be executed in stages; however, construction was temporarily halted due to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
Despite the ongoing war, the construction of the National Holodomor Museum remains a testament to the human determination to preserve memory. The architecture and exhibition are intended to become a symbol of the resilience of Ukrainian culture and the steadfastness of a nation that continues to fight for its identity and historical truth.
