Founded by Santiago Calatrava in 1983, Santiago Calatrava LLC is based in Zurich, Switzerland, with additional offices in New York and Dubai. Internationally renowned for its expressive fusion of architecture, engineering and sculpture, the practice has delivered some of the world’s most recognisable bridges, transport hubs, museums and civic buildings.
Born in Valencia, Spain, in 1951, Santiago Calatrava studied architecture at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura in Valencia before moving to Switzerland in 1975 to undertake postgraduate studies in civil engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich), where he completed his doctorate in 1981. Combining the disciplines of architecture, engineering and art, Calatrava established his architectural practice in Zurich shortly after winning the competition for the Stadelhofen Railway Station in 1983.
Calatrava’s work is distinguished by its dynamic structural expression, drawing inspiration from the human body, movement and the natural world. His buildings and bridges often feature sculptural forms, sweeping white steel structures and innovative engineering solutions that blur the boundaries between architecture and art.
Among the practice’s best-known projects are the Milwaukee Art Museum in Wisconsin, the Turning Torso residential tower in Malmö, Sweden, the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, the Oculus Transportation Hub at the World Trade Center in New York, and the Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro.
Recognised as one of the world’s leading architect-engineers, Santiago Calatrava has received numerous international honours for his contributions to architecture, engineering and design. His work continues to shape skylines and public infrastructure across Europe, North America, the Middle East and beyond.
