Emblem Apartments sits within a large Urban Rejuvenation Area located midway between the Central Business District of Sydney and Sydney International Airport.
The north enjoys views across the city skyline, the south with views to the airport and beyond. The east frontage opens directly to the new Wulaba Park. The west frontage forms the major address to a new boulevard.
The building sits between two smaller residential buildings designed by different architects. All three share a common basement carpark.
Height, setbacks and building footprint were strongly defined by the Development Control Plans for the Precinct and the brief for the Design Excellence Competition.
Integration of the building to the developing urban context, responding to neighbouring buildings and using vertical gardens to integrate the architecture with the park.
Site links create visual connection to the park and a green corridor.
Landscape plan encourages indoor/outdoor relationships for pubic interaction. Commercial cafes + restaurants on ground floor encourage public interaction.
Site links at ground level establish a relationship between Wulaba Park and the new western boulevard. The massing of the building vertically establishes slender form and reduces overall visual bulk of the building.
A communal sky garden on level 8 allows residents to enjoy views within a sheltered environment.
The building is a series of interlocking forms that take advatage of the setback conditions, to create a cascading play of rooftop gardens, continuation a relationship to the park.
Two separate lift lobbies are open to the elements for views and natural ventilation, facilitated by a series of voids and gardens that extend vertically up though the main tower lobby system.
Achieved a sense of community both with the building residents and locals. Design required mix of 1, 2 and 3 bed apartments. Lobby areas designed with seating for informal gatherings.
Connection to the park via extension of vertical gardens, courtyard gardens, communal rooftop and sky garden.
Landscape architect integral to the success of the project with planting a major feature of the design.
Daylight experts ensured natural light was accessible from all apartments. ESD and solar consultants engaged for the application of anodised blades to the building façade to reduce heat load and provide shade.
Commercially successful project for the client. All apartments sold off the plan. Client recognition of importance of a high-quality façade to the public realm, setting a standard for the developing area. Funds were appropriated to the façade over the interiors, recognising interiors are regularly
upgraded over time
Site plan maximises the number of north facing apartments and opportunities for cross ventilation.
Passive sun-shading devices for solar gain reduction. Circulation space was for the most part not enclosed and therefore naturally ventilated, with access to daylight.
Extensive landscaping throughout the building promotes community interaction areas but also individual privacy. Naturally ventilated lift lobby.
Double-height, private sky garden enables all residents to access the building’s city views. Enabled community creation, giving away premium north facing views to a communal garden for the residents.
