The house is the result of this architect’s unique design style, who was given a client’s brief simple in its clarity, and premised on working around existing conditions to keep the project buildable and cost effective.

Essentially, the house is a single high volume living space in the middle, with rooms located both front and back of the central living space. The living room is where all family activities would take place, other than sleeping. It is sunken half a level from the street but designed as a high atrium with operable skylights on both sides to bring in natural daylight and ventilation. Internal planting strips line the party walls on either side of the terrace house, beneath the skylights. The design created an unpretentious but comfortable, highly liveable space.

The jury is taken in by the design which is arresting in its uniqueness, and a refreshing back-to-basics take on designing a living space for the family.
