These pictures were taken by e-architect Editor Adrian Welch on a Scholarship to study Expressionist Architecture in Eastern Europe, provided by Manchester Society of Architects.
The trip started in Hamburg and took in Berlin, Dessau, Leipzig, Dresden, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Salzburg, Munich, Karlsruhe, Frankfurt, Hanover and back to the start.
The focus was on early 20th Century architecture such as the Czech Cubist buildings and the organic Modernism in the former East Germany.
I stayed in the Czech capital for a few days and visited Modern buildings in the west and north of the city and the Cubist buildings which are mostly around the city centre and the river area sotuh of the centre.
I was fortunate to be given a flat to stay in by an architect friend of my family, over on the west bank of the river. Highlights of the visit were the Castle high up on the north west side of the city and the TV tower on the east side above the railway station.
I was to return to the city whilst working as an architect with Eva Jiricna Architects in the mid 1990s where we attended the opening of an exhibition at the Castle, with a speech by President Vaclav Havel and Eva Jiricna, tied in with the completion of the Orangery to the north of the castle by EJAL.
On that trip we also visited celebrated architect Mies van der Rohe’s Tugenhat Villa, in the Czech city of Brno.

This new Czech building freely complements the development on the outskirts of the suburban village and with its distinctive archetypal silhouette completes its visual identity.
