Sheffield University – Jessops’ Building
This building is home to The Department of Music.
This education facility is located in a former Victorian hospital is ideally equipped for world-leading research and teaching in music. Much of the teaching takes place in our two light and airy Ensemble Rooms, which are also ideal for rehearsing medium-sized ensembles.
The Ethnomusicology Room acts as both a small-group rehearsal and teaching space and a storage space for the Department’s large collection of instruments from non-Western traditions, which include drums and mbiras from sub-Saharan Africa, a large collection of Korean percussion, and a range of instruments in the North Indian Classical tradition, such as tabla, harmoniums, santoor and tanpura.
In addition to the Soundhouse rooms, there are two practice rooms are based within the Jessop building which are the main space for instrumental lessons during the day. Students can also book out these rooms using the online booking system. Both rooms are equipped with upright pianos and music stands.
