The Chronicles of Georgia
The Chronicles of Georgia monument is a striking, monumental structure located on a hill overlooking Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. Designed by renowned Georgian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli, the monument was started in 1985 but remains unfinished. It stands as a powerful tribute to Georgia’s rich history and Christian heritage.
The monument features 16 towering columns, each standing at about 30 meters high. These columns are adorned with intricate carvings depicting significant events from Georgia’s past, as well as scenes from the life of Jesus Christ. The lower sections of the columns focus on pivotal moments in Georgian history, while the upper sections depict biblical themes, blending national pride with religious devotion.
Set against the backdrop of the Tbilisi Sea, the monument offers panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscapes, making it a popular tourist attraction. Despite its grandeur, the Chronicles of Georgia is lesser-known internationally, adding to its mystique and appeal for those who visit.
The monument represents not only the country’s historical and spiritual journey but also serves as a symbol of resilience, showcasing Georgia’s deep-rooted Christian traditions alongside its long-standing cultural legacy. Visitors are left with a lasting impression of both the monument’s scale and the depth of its narrative.

Former Tbilisi Technical Library
The architecture of the former Tbilisi Technical Library is a striking example of Soviet modernism with Brutalist elements, reflecting the bold and experimental spirit of 20th-century architecture in Georgia. Built in the 1970s, the structure is known for its monumental and futuristic design, embodying the aesthetics of the era while making a significant architectural statement in Tbilisi’s urban landscape.
The building’s facade is dominated by raw concrete, showcasing the Brutalist emphasis on materiality and texture. Its sculptural form features sharp angles, deep recesses, and geometric volumes that create a sense of depth and dynamism. The design is distinctly asymmetrical, with jutting blocks and cantilevered sections that give the building a visually complex and imposing presence. This interplay of solid and void spaces reflects the forward-thinking approach to architecture that was prevalent in Soviet Georgia.
One of the most distinctive features is the building’s facade, which includes large, grid-like windows that contrast with the heavy concrete walls. These openings allow natural light to penetrate deep into the interior, highlighting the library’s function as a space for learning and knowledge. The interior spaces, though designed with functionality in mind, also feature open, expansive layouts that reflect modernist ideals of accessibility and openness.
The former Tbilisi Technical Library’s architectural design is both a product of its time and a lasting symbol of Soviet-era innovation. Today, it remains an important part of Tbilisi’s architectural heritage, valued for its bold design and historical significance.
