Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios Appointed To Design New Centre For The Arts
Following a competitive interview Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios have been appointed as the Lead designer to redevelop the new Centre for the Arts at the University of Bath.

The Institute of Contemporary Interdisciplinary Arts (ICIA) will be the primary user of the new building for the delivery of student-led activities and its public programme of classes, workshops, performances and exhibitions in visual arts, dance, theatre and music.
In addition the University of Bath of School of Management with occupy part of the building for their executive training programme and there will be a dual use for some of the spaces where possible to achieve the maximum utilisation of the building. Flexibility of all space utilisation is a key to the functionality of this building with the existing theatre also being used for general teaching when not required by ICIA.
The site for the Centre comprises two existing buildings; the Peter Smithson conceived Arts Lecture Theatre and the Arts Barn that will be replaced by a substantial extension to the Arts Theatre that will include a gallery, dance and performance studios, visual arts studios and music practice rooms for individuals and ensembles as well as a suite of spaces for the University’s Executive MBA programme.
The new Centre will attract many visitors to the campus by offering a public programme of arts events and activities as well as catering for University students and staff providing both a new base for the arts and additional flexible teaching space.
Welcoming the appointment John Struthers, Director of ICIA, said: “These new facilities will make a huge difference to what the University can offer to our students, staff and the wider community.
“We are absolutely delighted that Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios have been selected to design this flagship project for the University and look forward to working with them over the coming months to create a building with regional and national importance.”

The University will be targeting a low energy building, a planning application will be submitted in summer 2012 and it is hoped that construction work on a new centre will begin in spring 2013, with the building open to the public from autumn 2014. It is anticipated that the total cost of the new Centre will be in the order of £10.75m.

The Institute of Contemporary Interdisciplinary Arts (ICIA) presents a public arts programme curated around an annual theme. The season includes visual arts, theatre, dance and music with an interdisciplinary emphasis, including exhibitions, films, discussions, practical workshops and classes.
