Dubai Design Week 2023 News
Event dates: 7-12 November 2023
Dubai Design Week (7-12 November) returns to Dubai Design District (d3) for its ninth edition. Highlighting great creative talent from the region and beyond, the festival provides a platform for both emerging and established designers, architects, educators, companies and all creative practitioners alike.
This year’s diverse free-to-attend programme will feature large-scale outdoor installations with a focus on how design, science and technology can converge to reclaim materials of our past, as well as reimagine new forms that foster sustainable practices; among key elements, visitors can explore immersive public interventions made from materials such as loofah and sugar and repurposed bamboo, with large-scale 3D printed architecture at the forefront.
The 2023 programme also sees the return of Abwab, an annually remodelled feature of Dubai Design Week focusing on architecture across the region, that this year will take form of a specially commissioned pavilion brought to life by an established Emirati designer exploring the use of palm tree stands as a prime example of a sustainable resource in architecture, as well as Urban Commissions, a design competition that highlights the UAE’s design-conscious urban development calling for functional, outdoor furniture for the public domain, such as innovative street furniture or shading, selected by a jury panel of experts in the design field; both projects will be staged and unveiled at Dubai Design Week in November.
Highlight exhibitions and pop-ups, include a graphic design activation that aims to document the Arab world’s visual culture, a presentation of student projects that propose environmental solutions from international and local education institutions, as well as a showcase that takes a look at how design can play a role in supporting marginalized communities.
Visitors to d3 during Dubai Design Week will also have the opportunity to experiment ancient as well as innovative ways of making through a series of hands-on workshops and masterclasses, facilitated by independent makers, design collectives, small businesses and cultural institutions that cater to a range of design disciplines including ceramics, architecture, printmaking and sustainable material design, and over the weekend of the festival the Design Market will offer a retail experience full of homegrown offerings from homewares to ready-to-wear.
Downtown Design
Downtown Design, the highlight event of Dubai Design Week, is a boutique-size fair that offers a great mix of regional and international brands, designers and makers across key sectors including product categories furniture, lighting and homeware, with a section dedicated to limited-edition design, individual studios and collaborations from across the globe.
Names this year include Cassina, Kartell, MillerKnoll, cc-tapis and Lasvit to mention a few, as well as Emirati talent Omar Al Gurg with his studio MODU, Lebanese talent Fadi Sarieddine and BEIT Collective, who will showcase pieces designed by Adam Nathaniel Furman as well as Akar de Nissim and Edward Linacre and collectives of undiscovered talent from the region and beyond such as Anatolia, a curated showcase of talent from Turkey curated by Isola design, the Female Artists of the Middle East and the Dutch collective curated by Margriet Vollenberg.
