Sweden’s largest promotion initiative ever is inaugurated at the world exhibition Expo2020 in Dubai

On Friday 1 October, the world exhibition Expo 2020 will be inaugurated in Dubai. Sweden participates with an exhibition pavilion, and the Swedish investment is a co-financing between the state and the business community in equal parts. 143 Swedish partners, companies, organizations and authorities contribute funding or content to the Swedish initiative. The Swedish pavilion, The Forest, has the theme “Co-Creation for Innovation” and is located in the sustainability district. A total of 192 countries are participating, which is a record.

The Swedish pavilion is 2,500 square meters, built entirely of wood and filled with lots of smart, innovative and energy-efficient solutions. 18-meter-high tree trunks from Dalarna and Västmanland stretch towards the sky. For each tree used, several new ones have been planted. The pavilion’s downstairs consists of a public exhibition on the theme of sustainability, open to visitors, 12 hours every day during the exhibition’s 184 days.

– Expo 2020 is a unique platform for Swedish trade, investment and visitor promotion. The pandemic has emphasized the importance of a green reboot. It is important that Sweden is in place when the new “business as unusual” is formed. It is also an opportunity to promote Sweden from a broader perspective with a focus on priority issues such as democracy, human rights, gender equality, responsible entrepreneurship and sustainability. Special emphasis and attention has been given to workers’ rights throughout the project, says Commissioner General Jan Thesleff

– Sweden is ranked as one of the world’s most innovative countries, but there is great potential to further strengthen our position. The focus is on business promotion, attracting investment and talent as well as the broad work with the image of Sweden, says the Expo committee’s chairman Karl-Henrik Sundström.

Expo 2020 is a global event, but it is also the first time a world exhibition has been held in the Middle East. For those who cannot physically visit Expo 2020, it is possible to follow it and the Swedish participation digitally.

Sweden breaks ground at Expo 2020 Dubai by a tree planting ceremony

On 8 October 2019, the construction of Sweden’s pavilion at the Expo 2020 world exhibition in Dubai officially started. But instead of a traditional ground breaking with a shovel put into the ground, Swedish Minister for Foreign Trade Anna Hallberg planted trees at the start of the construction of the Swedish pavilion. Tree planting is part of the theme of the Swedish pavilion “The Forest” and resonates with the ambition to build the pavilion entirely in wood to minimize its impact on the climate.
Expo 2020 Dubai is expected to welcome 25 million visits from across the world, and Sweden’s pavilion will showcase the best of Swedish innovation and why co-creation for innovation is key to achieve inclusive, sustainable and long-lasting prosperity.

Today, Swedish Minister for Foreign Trade, Ms. Anna Hallberg, performed a tree planting ceremony at Expo 2020 Dubai, officially marking the beginning of the construction of the Swedish pavilion The Forest.

To highlight the strong focus on sustainability in the Swedish pavilion, especially in a region with a tough climate for plant cultivation where tree removal rarely is regarded as something positive, the Swedish Expo organization had produced a film in which Sweden’s sustainable and large-scale forest cultivation was shown.

In the film, the one-hundred invited guests at the tree planting were able to travel to the vast plains of the region Dalarna where the trees for the Swedish pavilion were picked up last spring. For each tree harvested for the pavilion, three new ones will be planted. The Swedish pavilion will be located in Expo 2020’s sustainability district.

During the Ground Planting ceremony, Minister Hallberg addressed Sweden’s strong focus on combining innovative solutions with sustainable practices as being the main reason for building the Swedish pavilion in the sustainability district of the Expo 2020 site. She also underscored the importance of global co-creation – an essential part of Sweden’s theme – Co-creation for Innovation.

“I am very proud to witness the ground-breaking for the construction of Sweden’s pavilion at the Expo 2020 in Dubai – in just one year the eyes of the world will be focused on the UAE and this will be an opportunity for the country to showcase state-of-the-art technology and innovative and sustainable solutions.

The image of Sweden is very positive in UAE, generally associated with nature and beautiful landscapes as well as the strong recycling culture. We want to show that Sweden is also an innovative and prominent hi-tech country with world-leading companies and that there are major business and collaboration opportunities.” says H.E. Sweden’s theme is “Co-creation for Innovation“. Anders Lönnberg is the Commissioner General for the Swedish Expo organization: “Swedes have for a long time collaborated and co-created. It is natural in Sweden that if we utilize knowledge from all sectors and put it together into something new, you can do a lot of good, both for us in Sweden and abroad. Co-creation for innovation therefore becomes a natural theme in our pavilion.”

The Swedish pavilion, the Forest, won an architectural competition and is designed by a team of three agencies from three different countries, which itself is indeed a very successful co-creation; Alessandro Ripellino Architects, Studio Adrien Gardère and Luigi Pardo Architetti.

“Beautiful and enchanting, it is a fusion of dense Nordic woodland and Arabic geometric design, bringing together two cultures. At ground level, public areas house the exhibition and café, while offices and conference rooms are raised aloft – like tree houses – forming a roof over parts of the pavilion”, said by the jury when announcing the winners.

The Swedish pavilion consists of five themes: Next generation’s travel and transport, Smart cities, Circular and bio-based economy, Life science, and A connected industry and new materials.

The Forest will promote Sweden as a world-class partner and location for trade, investment and tourism.

The Forest – Sustainability in practice in the Swedish pavilion.

The Swedish pavilion the Forest, located in the sustainability district, has a three-step effect in durability. By using alternative materials instead of concrete and steel, we expect to save 1,000 tons of carbon dioxide. Furthermore, the Forest combines the two ways to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere: by reducing emissions, or by extracting an additional 2,000 tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it – reducing ‘carbon sources’ and increasing ‘carbon sinks’.
