Center in Science & Biodiversity of Risaralda
The Center in Science & Biodiversity of Risaralda, CiBi, is a mixed use building located in the municipality of Dosquebradas, in the department of Risaralda, Colombia. The region is internationally known by the richness of its Fauna and Flora, as it is the second in the world with more different ecosystems.
This is mainly because of its geographical location between the Western and Central Andean Mountain Range that motivates a singular orography which makes possible a great variety of climates. From the ecuatorial rain-forest to a polar mountain climate at more than 5,000 meters high.
Unfortunately, Dosquebradas is also known as one of the cities in Colombia with the lowest public area per citizen. To amend this lack, the Government of Risaralda decided to promote a Center in Science & Biodiversity that could also fulfill this objective, providing the city with a public square that would act as the meeting point that nowadays does not exist.
The building was projected with the double objective of solving the need of public space for the city and answering to the decision of conceiving a Center of Science & BIodiversity that can act as a foreign tourist attraction remarking the main potentials of Risaralda. The Center has a gross area of 11,700square meters with a 6,700 square meters public space on its roof.
This great public area ratio per gross area is achieved by taking profit of the topography of the plot, which is 2 meters under the level of the surrounding streets. Thus, the programme of the Center is concentrated at this semibasement level, which has the great advantage of a complete light control that widens the possible expositions that shall be curated into it, letting the roof, that is accesible from the adjacent streets for a public space conceived as a natural park with native species.
The Center, apart from the expositive area, also has some polyvalent rooms, such as a 500 places auditorium (that can be extended to a 750 places one), a Domo-cinema, laboratories, multipurpose areas, etc. Together with these ones, a restaurant, a cafeteria, retail areas, a kindergarten and a gift shop complete the programme that is thought to make the Center sustainable economically.
The Center is accesible from two sides, making possible a simultaneous use of the building both as Center of Science and Biodiversity and a multipurpose leisure center. It is possible to have visitors experiencing the permanent and temporary expositions and at the same time run a fair using the domo and the multipurpose areas. This polivalence makes the building reliable in terms of its economical support.
The public area on the roof is conceived as an atlas of Risaralda’s natural biodiversity. The roof, together with the 9 patios that connect this level with the Center below, provides the visitors with a direct experience of some of the most representative natural species of the region. Some boxes appear above the roof level, to provide double height spaces in the Center below, and to achieve the necessary representativity that the building needs to become a landmark of Risaralda.
The whole building is finished in raw Royal Veta Stone, a local variety of limestone, that together with the landscape design contributes to generate the image of a monumental building invaded by wild nature, and at the same time generates a stately style that is the opposite of the raw interior finished in concrete.
