Lyon 1633 Apartment Building located on 1200 sqm site, which has a rather narrow front to the public space, but it is long enough to allow the design of a residential project.
It is conceived as a long block of 32 apartments distributed in 6 stories, leaving the first one open with small enclosures for accesses and services and a few parking spots.
This level is presented as a continuity of the pedestrian public space immediately adjacent to the site, which is a typical attribute of the residential architecture in this area which proliferated in the 60’s and 70´s.
That is why we deliberately chose not to force divisions between the public and private space, but on the contrary, this limit becomes diffuse and the lobby of the building is practically a projection of the outer space, something that can be illustrated by the concrete bench that starts on the sidewalk and goes into the lobby, inviting people to the interior in a fluent way.
The upper stories lay over few structural columns and walls and the access to them are projected through two glassed bodies that contains the stairways and elevators. The decision of dividing the vertical circulations into two comes from a commercial and spatial requirement.
The first one consisted on reducing the excess of common space by avoiding long corridors that, due to the length of the project, would have been excessively long. The second requirement was to allow a rather good ventilation an illumination in the apartments, so if we projected a central corridor, half of the apartments would have been facing south, an orientation that in this latitude is not convenient.
Thus, the decision of atomizing both circulations allow us to project double orientation units, leaving bedrooms at the northern façade and living rooms mainly orientated to the south, allowing good thermal behavior and crossed ventilation in every unit.
