Infrastructure System for Dhaka Design
John McAslan + Partners (JMP) is developing a $3billion metro project comprising 16 elevated stations and a depot, spanning a 20km route from Dhaka’s residential district in the north to the business centre in the south.
Hiro Aso, Director of Infrastructure at JMP states: “JMP is delighted to have won this major commission to design a significant new infrastructure system for Dhaka. Transport Cabinet Minister Mr Obaidul Qader has given the scheme his wholehearted approval – this is a very exciting opportunity for the practice and adds to our growing Asian infrastructure portfolio, including metro stations and the new Anand Vihar transport hub in New Delhi.”
This ambitious project will be delivered in 3 stages and creates connections between areas of Dhaka in support of the wider urban strategy of decentralisation of urban activities and population from the centre to satellite communities, whilst addressing the growing problems of traffic congestion and air pollution. All stations are to be operational by 2022, and are forecasted to serve 505,000 passengers per day by 2025.
The practice is also undertaking urban integration studies in collaboration with a local architectural team, to embed the stations into their immediate and wider urban context.
