Nationwide Sustainable Housing Awards – Winners

Students from Cardiff and Manchester think green to scoop £3,000 prizes
Nationwide Building Society today announces the winners of the second Nationwide Sustainable Housing Awards. Launched in September 2009 in association with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), this second in a series of three annual ideas competitions, was open to undergraduate architecture and design students. The theme for the 2009/2010 awards was ‘Suburban Urban – Secure and Green’ with sub categories of new build, refurbishment and community projects.

As the third largest mortgage provider, Nationwide has a strong interest in housing issues. The Society is committed to supporting sustainable and affordable housing for all, and is confident the new competition will stimulate and reward innovative thinking about how people can live more sustainably in the future.

Design ideas were received from 44 students from 20 Schools and 9 submissions from America. The prizes were awarded by Wayne Hemingway, of Hemingway Design, at a ceremony at the RIBA’s London HQ on Tuesday 8th June 2010.

The winners were:

Overall winner, Community and New build category
First prize: Matthew Kidner & Jonathan Davey – University of Nottingham (wins £3000)

Community category
Second prize: Robert Buss – University of Bath (wins £1500)
Third prize: Anthony Campbell & James West – Manchester School of Architecture (win £1000)

New build category
Joint second prize: Alice Harwood – Welsh School of Architecture (wins £1,500)
Daniel Cross – Anglia Ruskin University (wins £1,500)
Third prize: Aaron Birch – Oxford Brookes University (wins £1000)

In the same category, commendations were given to:
Steven Dunn – Strathclyde University
Nicholas Wheeler – Oxford Brookes University

And special mentions to:
Andra-Elena Antone – Welsh School of Architecture
Kemissa Colin – Savannah College of Art and Design, USA

Refurbishment/regeneration category
A commendation was given to:
Amelie von Celsing – Central Saint Martins, London

To recognise the support given to this initiative by the Schools of Architecture, the judging panel decided to award a special prize to the School of Architecture that has most embraced and supported the Nationwide Awards. This award of £2000 is given to the Welsh School of Architecture.Graham Beale, chief executive at Nationwide, said: “We are delighted to announce the winners of these second annual awards and I would like to thank all the students who took part. There were some fantastic entries which made it very difficult for the judging panel to select the winners.

“As a mutual organisation and the UK ’s third largest mortgage provider, Nationwide is committed to affordable home ownership and supporting sustainable housing and communities for the future. This fits neatly with this year’s ‘Suburban Urban’ theme, which will encourage young architects and design students to build sustainability into their future designs.”

Details of the 2011 awards will be available to schools of architecture from Summer 2011.

Commitments Nationwide has made to the pursuit of a sustainable future include:

– Recycling 100% of paper from all of its UK sites;

– Donating surplus furniture and office equipment to a charity near its Swindon headquarters, which donates corporate furniture and equipment to local schools and charities;

– Recycling used and obsolete corporate clothing;

– Offering members who use the Society’s on line facilities and who have a FlexAccount, card-based savings accounts or credit card the option to receive online rather than paper based statements.

Nationwide Sustainable Housing Awards – Theme Announced

Competition challenges students to think ‘Suburban Urban – secure and green’

Following the success of its first student competition in 2008, Nationwide Building Society is launching the 2009/2010 Nationwide Sustainable Housing Awards. Working in partnership with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), this is the second in a series of annual competitions open to undergraduate architecture and design students.

For 2009-2010 the theme is “Suburban Urban – secure and green” and prizes will be awarded for designs of an individual home, or group of homes, as well as the wider community in either new build or refurbishment projects. The aim of the competition is to stimulate and reward innovative thinking about how people can live in a more sustainable way in the future – picking up key characteristics of what might be recognised today as a ‘suburban’ lifestyle.Wayne Hemingway MBE of Hemingway Design will announce the winners of each category at an awards ceremony in June 2010.*

As a leading provider of funds for social housing and the UK’s third largest mortgage provider, Nationwide wishes to promote social, economic and environmental sustainability in housing. By supporting the Sustainable Housing Awards, Nationwide is hoping to encourage others to think in a sustainable way.

New awards scheme incentivises students to think green

Nationwide Building Society today announces the launch of the Nationwide Sustainable Housing Awards. Working in partnership with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the annual ideas competition is open to all undergraduate architecture and design students. The competition aims to stimulate and reward innovative thinking about how people can live more sustainably in the future. Students are invited to present sustainable design ideas for one of three categories: existing housing, new build or community /neighbourhood. Kevin McCloud, presenter of Grand Designs will announce the winners of each category at an awards ceremony in February 2009.

Nationwide is the UK’s second largest mortgage lender and a leading provider of funds for affordable housing. As a mutual organisation Nationwide is committed to supporting the communities from which it has evolved. Having made its own corporate commitments to pursue a sustainable future, Nationwide is hoping to stimulate others to think sustainably too.

The competition is planned to run for three years. The theme of this first year’s competition is ‘Sustainable Housing in an Urban Environment’. The closing date for entries is Friday 16 January 2009.
