Guildford Crematorium by Haverstock has been announced as the 2022 Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Southeast Building of the Year.

The new-build crematorium in Godalming provides a chapel for 135 people seated and standing space for 50 along with floral tributes, to replace the existing building which was at the end of its natural life. The project involved creating a suitable replacement which respond to modern practices.

RIBA President, Simon Allford said:

“Winning a regional Building of the Year Award is a major achievement. Across the country projects have been selected for this accolade because they are exemplars of the very best of innovative, intelligent and delightful design.

“The results of positive collaboration between architect and client, and design team and contractor, they demonstrate that high quality, sustainable architecture can positively impact the lives of the people that engage with it. My warmest congratulations to all those involved.”

The RIBA Regional Building of the Year Awards were presented at a ceremony at the RIBA’s Headquarters in London on Tuesday evening (24 May).

2022 RIBA Southeast Award Winning Buildings

Seven projects have been awarded Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Southeast Awards – including a new secondary school building in Tunbridge Wells and a 1930s Dutch barn converted into a family home in West Sussex.

The 2022 RIBA Southeast Award winning projects are:

Kent

Surrey

East Sussex

West Sussex

The 7 projects were selected by the expert jury, who visited all 12 shortlisted projects.

Regional Jury Chair Adam Richards said of this year’s award winners:

“Good architecture solves problems, makes ‘places’ and shapes us as people. The significant number of school projects in this year’s RIBA Southeast Awards shows that many clients in the education sector recognise that working with good architects can add significant value. This value lies not just in mastering often-complex briefs, but also in adding quality buildings sensitively and creatively to school estates, for the benefit of students and staff.

“Other award-winning buildings demonstrate high standards in conservation, innovation and an understanding of the nature of place – harnessing the communicative power of architecture to mediate our understanding of life and death.”

Special Awards went to:

  • Morlands Farm Dutch Barn – RIBA Southeast Client of the Year
  • Cobham Dairy – RIBA Southeast Conservation Award
  • Morlands Farm Dutch Barn – RIBA Southeast Small Project of the Year, sponsored by Gaggenau.

The 2022 RIBA Southeast Building of the Year, sponsored by Taylor Maxwell, will be announced on 24 May at a ceremony at RIBA’s HQ in London.

RIBA Southeast Award winners will now be considered for a highly-coveted RIBA National Award in recognition of their architectural excellence, which will be announced in June. The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize for the best building of the year will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning projects later in the year.

Morlands Farm is a private house with a big difference: the clients have created a wonderful eight-acre public garden, wanting to live as well as work in the midst of this landscape. This means sharing their lives with the public who come to see their Sussex Prairie Gardens.

The architects recognised that they would have to design a robust building to cope with the extreme weather conditions, with high winds, moving sand and salt air. They chose a simple shape – an abstraction of the neighbouring buildings, reminiscent of a child’s drawing of a house.

Fletcher Crane Architects were engaged by Claremont Fan Court School to design and deliver a new building to provide ten subject-specific classrooms set over two levels, on its sensitive Grade I listed historic estate. The route into the site follows a fall in the ground level, and the new building contrasts this with a strong horizontal roof line.
