The Importance of a Healthy Lawn
18 April 2022
At the surface, most people look at a yard and see grass, plants, or another weekend chore. But lawns are more than that, when one stops and reflects at the space that surrounds their home, they see more than a “chore”. Homeowners see a first impression of their home, a space for family and friends to gather, environmental benefits, bill reduction, and how to improve their overall well-being. All of these benefits are made possible from having a healthy lawn. You can obtain a healthy lawn through do-it-yourself projects or by simply hiring a professional lawn care company.
First Impression
For the majority of homes, the front lawn is the first thing people see as they drive by or enter one’s driveway. If the lawn is unimpressive, it will most likely be overlooked or even be an eye sore on your street or neighborhood. However, for healthy lawns, a quick glance can turn into a double take, and many neighbors will appreciate seeing a well-maintained lawn. These lawns can add value to and aid in selling your home and garden. Potential buyers see a healthy, well-manicured lawn as an added bonus to the property, knowing they will be able to perform routine maintenance rather than a complete overhaul.
Space for Outdoor Activities
Having a healthy lawn gives space for a multitude of outdoor activities. It enables owners to send their children outside to play in the yard, run around, explore a jungle gym, or play games with friends. It also provides opportunities for picnics with family or friends, or hosting a cookout or outdoor get together. A healthy lawn is also important for your pets. Having a safe and well-kept lawn gives them space to run around, explore, and enjoy the outdoors without the worry of weeds, harmful plants or an abundance of allergens that affects their health.
Environmental Impacts
There are many positive environmental impacts that come with having a healthy lawn. One important impact is how our grass, plants, and trees absorb carbon dioxide and turn it into oxygen. These same plants also trap dust and dirt particles that float through the air, both of which are filtering and providing cleaner air for us to breathe outside. When your lawn is thick and healthy, it also reduces and prevents top soil erosion during heavy rainfall, wind, or snowfall. A healthy lawn provides a home for microorganisms and bugs, which are essential for different wildlife’s survival.
Reduces Energy and Water Bills
A thick, healthy lawn can help reduce one’s energy bill, particularly in the summer months. Your grass has the ability to lessen the reflectivity of the sun’s rays, while trees, shrubs, and other flowers can also aid in blocking these rays from warming up your home. Whereas concrete, or blacktops, can allow the rays to bounce off their surface and onto our homes. These healthy lawns absorb the proper amount of moisture, which reduces the amount of time and water needed to water them, reducing your water bill.
Improves your Overall Well-Being
Finally, keeping your lawn healthy can impact you by reducing stress. When your lawn has trouble areas, weeds, is overgrown, or needs constant work, it can be a big stressor (and time consuming). When its properly maintained, it can allow one the joy of gardening or landscaping more. It provides an invitation for exercise and activities, and to many, turning part of their lawn into their own oasis. Allowing them the chance to rest in a hammock, sip a drink in a lawn chair, read a book on a blanket, or simply enjoy the scenery or stars above.
All in all, there’s more to a lawn than meets the eye. A well managed lawn is a wonderful addition to one’s home, family, environment, bill reduction, and well-being. These are just a few reasons why it is important to have and to keep a healthy lawn.
