Toyo Ito Architect
Founded by Toyo Ito in 1971, Toyo Ito & Associates, Architects is based in Tokyo, Japan, and is internationally recognised for its innovative architecture that explores the relationship between the physical and virtual worlds. The practice has produced an influential body of work spanning cultural institutions, commercial developments, public buildings and private residences, consistently pushing the boundaries of structure, technology and spatial experience.
Born in Seoul in 1941 to Japanese parents and raised in Japan, Toyo Ito graduated from the University of Tokyo’s Department of Architecture in 1965. After working for Kiyonori Kikutake & Associates, he established his own practice, Urban Robot (URBOT), in 1971, renaming it Toyo Ito & Associates, Architects in 1979. Throughout his career, Ito has sought to create architecture that responds to the changing nature of contemporary society through light, fluid and adaptable spaces.
The practice is renowned for its experimental approach to form, structure and technology, producing buildings that combine engineering innovation with elegant simplicity. Notable projects include the Sendai Mediatheque, the Tod’s Omotesando Building in Tokyo, the Mikimoto Ginza 2 flagship, the Taichung Metropolitan Opera House in Taiwan, and the National Taiwan University College of Social Sciences.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to contemporary architecture, Toyo Ito was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2013, becoming the sixth Japanese architect to receive the profession’s highest honour. His work has profoundly influenced generations of architects through its exploration of transparency, flexibility and the evolving relationship between architecture, nature and urban life.
