Fletcher Priest’s masterplan in collaboration with Sauerbruch Hutton for the large site on Ludgate Hill, the City’s ceremonial route to St. Paul’s, stretching back along the Old Bailey to the Central Criminal Court, will include 34, 850m2 of new offices and retail space.
60 Ludgate Hill and 30 Old Bailey will replace two existing buildings built in the 1960’s and together will transform the streetscape around a new public space, inspired by the theatrical Piazza di San Ignazio in Rome. Polychromatic glazed frontages to the new piazzetta will also highlight an original and distinctive terracotta facade on Old Bailey. With 60 Ludgate Hill, Fletcher Priest extends its contextual work in the City with a building that responds to and celebrates the complex historic fabric around the Cathedral precinct.
Strategic views of the dome of St Paul’s are revealed and an extensive roof terrace will overlook the processional route up to the Cathedral’s west door. Full height windows within a deeply profiled masonry frame will provide both open views of the street and visual solidity to the street frontage.
Amber cathedral glass provides colour to the piazzetta frontage, and a high level double-height loggia on the top floors reveals a dramatic view of the Cathedral west front and dome.
Working with landscape architects Gustafson Porter, streetscape improvements include remedial work to existing disconnected pavement levels and the introduction of a new public thoroughfare across the site that will connect the sweeping curved frontages along Old Bailey, Ludgate Hill and Limeburner Lane. Wider pavements and tree planting will benefit the new shops, cafes and restaurants, and selected landscaping for the roof terrace will provide year round texture and colour. 30 Old Bailey was designed by Sauerbruch Hutton.
