New Premises For The Københavns Museum By Brisac Gonzalez
Brisac Gonzalez has completed design proposals for the new premises of the Københavns Museum within the confines of the historically significant Christian IV Bryghus in the heart of Copenhagen. The building, sits between the Schimidt Hammer Lassen designed Royal Danish Library to the east and OMA’s planned Bryghusprojekte to the west.
The Christian IV Bryghus (Christian IV’s Brewery) dates from 1608. It was originally built for military purposes as part of Copenhagen’s fortifications. Through the course of time it has been used a beer brewery, navy depot and storage warehouse. It has been ravaged by fire on two occasions and the interiors have withstood many alterations. Since 1998 the building has been empty.
The Brisac Gonzalez scheme comprises:
• A new external core to the north that leaves all floor plates completely uninterrupted by solid partitions.
• A series of generous ramps that that are placed between facing rows of tree-like timber columns.
• The removal of all floor boards on the upper two floors that will expose the soaring volume of the building’s upper roof.
The proposal is of a ‘light touch’. Evolving under the premise that all proposed changes are reparable, the harbour facing facade is sacrosanct and the inside and outside of the building are of equal importance.
It is envisioned that over 80% of the 8000m2 brick and wood building will be for front of house purposes. The proposal has gained the backing of the building’s owner Slots- og Ejendomsstyrelsen (Palace and Properties Agency).

Office for Metropolitan Architecture design for the Bryghusgrunden Project at the historic waterfront in Copenhagen. The building will include new facilities for the Danish Architecture Center (DAC), the headquarters of the Realdania Foundation, along with a distinctive mix of residential units, public program and playground facilities. The Bryghusgrunden Project is located on the harbor on the site of an old brewery, the Bryghusgrunden, one of the few remaining areas with the potential to link the city to the waterfront. The building itself will straddle the busy Christians Brygge ring road.
