28th September 2016 – The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is pleased to announce that a team led by Brock Carmichael Architects has won the Tristan da Cunha Design Ideas Competition. The competition, run by RIBA Competitions on behalf of the Government of Tristan da Cunha, sought design ideas to create a more self-sustainable future for the South Atlantic Ocean island community of Edinburgh of the Seven Seas.

The competition encouraged innovative and cost-effective proposals for the re-design and consolidation of Tristan’s government (community infrastructure) buildings. The brief encouraged initiatives to significantly improve the standard and performance of residential properties, together with improvements to the island’s agrarian systems to better support grazing and the year-round growth of fresh produce.

The winning proposals from Brock Carmichael (working with Oval Partnership, Arup International Development, Multi QS and Dr Gerda Speller from the University of Surrey) were selected from schemes developed by a shortlist that also included design teams led by: Lateral Office (Toronto, Canada); John Puttick Associates (New York, USA); Scott Brownrigg (Cardiff, UK) and Javier Terrados and Fernando Suárez (Seville, Spain).

HH Alex Mitham (Tristan da Cunha Administrator and Head of Government) said: “On behalf of the community of Tristan da Cunha I would again like to thank everyone who participated in the competition, and particularly the five short-listed teams who further refined their proposals during the second, design development phase.

The Tristanians are very grateful for all the hard work involved and the different ways in which teams responded to the Brief and the unique set of challenges posed by delivering a project on the World’s remotest inhabited island. The Island Council felt the Brock Carmichael team had developed a very strong set of proposals that demonstrated both a practical approach and an in-depth understanding of the issues. We hope to be able to arrange for key members of the Brock Carmichael team to visit Tristan and meet the community in the near future as the first step in hopefully going onto realise the project”.

John Whiles (Jestico + Whiles, acting as the RIBA Architect Adviser) commented: “This has been a complex and intriguing process with a far broader remit than normally experienced in architectural competitions. The wide ranging international response brought a new dimension to the assessment of the submissions that I believe has served the Tristan community well. I have great respect for the Island’s Administrator and indeed Council for the care which they have taken over the selection of the winning team. The result of this competition could have a significant impact on the Islander’s lives, fitting for the future indeed”.

Martin Watson (Partner, Brock Carmichael Architects) said: “We are delighted and honoured to have been chosen as the winners of this unique competition and would like to pass on our thanks to the people of Tristan for selecting our team. We are very much looking forward to forging a long-term partnership with the community to deliver practical solutions for the benefit of future generations to come”.

Tristan da Cunha Design Contest

Shortlist announced: International competition to design a more sustainable future for Tristan da Cunha’s community

12 October 2015 – RIBA Competitions and the Government of Tristan da Cunha are pleased to announce the shortlist for the competition seeking design ideas to create a more self-sustainable future for the Island community of Edinburgh of the Seven Seas. The competition is seeking innovative, cost-effective approaches for the re-design and consolidation of Tristan’s government (community infrastructure) buildings; initiatives to significantly improve the living standards and performance of residential properties; together with improvements to the Island’s agrarian systems to better support grazing and the year-round growth of fresh produce.

The anonymous first phase of the competition attracted 37 entries from applicants based in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom and the United States of America.

15 schemes were long-listed by a Panel comprised of HH Alex Mitham (Tristan da Cunha Administrator and Head of Government), Laura Benyohai (Tristan da Cunha & Pitcairn Desk Officer, Foreign and Commonwealth Office) Chris Carnegy (Tristan da Cunha, UK representative), Jim Kerr (Tristan da Cunha, UK adviser) and John Whiles (Jestico + Whiles, acting as the RIBA Architect Adviser) when the Administrator was in the UK. Alex Mitham then presented the long-listed schemes to the Island Council for their further consideration on his return to Tristan in mid-July. The Council was delighted by the interest shown in Tristan by design teams from around the globe, together with the myriad ideas contained within the design proposals.

The five concept designs short-listed for further development were submitted (in alphabetical order of design team lead) by:

– Brock Carmichael Architects – Liverpool, UK
– Lateral Office – Toronto, Canada
– John Puttick Associates – New York, USA
– Scott Brownrigg – Cardiff, UK
– Javier Terrados and Fernando Suárez – Seville, Spain

HH Alex Mitham said: “On behalf of the community of Tristan da Cunha I would like to thank everyone who has participated in the competition to date. We were staggered by the scope and variety of ideas, and also heartened to see so many people wishing to assist such a remote community. It has been very difficult to agree a shortlist as there were so many wonderful initiatives.

However after careful consideration the Island has chosen five schemes, and I would like to congratulate these teams on their design proposals. I know that the community will be enthralled to see these take shape into fully formed plans over the next few months.

It is very humbling to see so many teams from around the globe spend so much time and effort on their design proposals. Tristanians are very grateful for all the hard work involved and it has been an enlightening experience for the whole community.”

John Whiles commented: “This has been a complex and intriguing competition made all the richer by the worldwide response proposing an extraordinary range of solutions. The reward for me has been the detailed involvement of the Islanders in the selection of the last five entrants who now have a great challenge ahead to refine their initial proposals into an effective and achievable set of principles.”

Teams will be invited to present their developed design proposals to the Judging Panel when the Administrator next returns to the UK in early Summer 2016.

Tristan da Cunha

Tristan da Cunha: Situated within the South Atlantic Ocean, Tristan da Cunha is the remotest inhabited Island in the world. The Island lays 1,750 miles (7 to 10 days sailing) south-west of Cape Town. Life on Tristan is ruled largely by the weather, with the Island only being accessible by sea on approximately 60 days per year due to the severity of the ocean swells and limitations of the harbour facility.

Tristan da Cunha actually consists of four islands – Tristan (the main island), Nightingale and Inaccessible, which together form a group, and Gough Island that lies 220 miles to the south-east. Inaccessible and Gough are both UNESCO World Heritage sites with Gough being home to a small meteorological station where up to nine scientists live for a year at a time. Tristan is the only island with a permanent community, known as Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, which has a population of around 270 people.
