Quinte Technology Enhanced Learning Complex

Creativity

The dynamic form of the high tech Quinte Technology Enhanced Learning Complex, Belleville is generated from an urban correction. Due to an unusual set of circumstances, the College backs onto its current entry drive at a 45 degree angle. The resource centre is rotated to align with the entry drive, creating a dynamic new entry marker to the College.

This marker is intended to represent the College’s focus on technology as well as on the student’s interest in the surrounding natural setting. The single zinc surface folds to form the volume of the resource centre, and then is cut open to introduce light and views.

Context

The library creates a positive urban relationship to Ontario’s concession grid, while responding to the 1970’s pre-cast architecture of the existing College. An innovative pre-cast wall system that creates a dynamic pattern of light and shadow was developed to ‘ground’ the project with this environment.

Program

New student spaces are created through the relocation of the existing library into a new addition, and the conversion of the vacated space into a computer commons, a 150 seat lecture hall, classrooms and seminar spaces. High speed fibre optic cabling is utilized to facilitate multi-task interactive teaching environments. The new resource centre combines the functions of a computer commons with those of a traditional library, creating a single information resource for the entire College.

Good Design / Good Business

The students’ perception of Loyalist College has been radically altered by the project, making it a desirable destination for prospective students. The learning commons and new lecture halls are experienced immediately upon entry to the College, demonstrating its technological advancements and establishing their importance on campus.

Legacy

Spaces filled with north light, and views to the College’s natural setting, creates a learning space that students naturally gravitate toward. The building’s iconic appearance directly expresses the academic focus as well as endorses the forward thinking of the school in general.
