Young Street Campus for Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge
Richard Murphy Architects has completed the final phase of development at Anglia Ruskin University’s new Young Street Campus in Cambridge.
These last two phases complete the practice’s master-plan for the 3.5 hectare Young Street campus and include a new home for the Visual Eye Research Unit, facilities for the Sports Science department and a 200 seat lecture theatre.
The new spaces will be occupied by students during October 2015, and a formal launch of the public artwork commissioned by Anglia Ruskin on campus, ‘I’m Laughing at Clouds’ by Michael Pinsky will take place on Thursday.
Previous work by Richard Murphy Architects at Young Street includes the first phase building, which is home to the Faculty of Health and Social Care and was completed in 2014, and the £1m rehabilitation of the former Victorian Ragged School into a music therapy centre, designated as a building of local interest and also completed in 2014.
The environmental performance of the 1st and 3rd phase buildings in particular is critical to understanding their design. The buildings, which join to form a continuous new street frontage, are based on an innovative natural ventilation solution to reduce overall running costs whilst providing a distinctive architectural profile.
The frontage on New Street has been designed using externally expressed brick chimneys to form a major architectural feature with obvious references to the famous elevation on Trinity Lane in the city centre.
James Mason, Director, Richard Murphy Architects said: “The site at Young Street was an ambitious project for Anglia Ruskin to grow, out with its main East Road campus. Situated in the Mill Road Conservation Area, it had lain derelict for a number of years. Through the careful design of the new buildings, the restoration of the existing, and the creation of new routes and external spaces, we had an opportunity to reinstate a small piece of Cambridge’s urban fabric. We also wanted to reflect the innovative, environmentally conscious and forward thinking nature of Anglia Ruskin within the design, and I think we have achieved that balance.”
