RIBA 2018 Honorary Fellowships

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) announced the 2018 RIBA Honorary Fellowships, which will be awarded to individuals from a diverse spectrum of backgrounds, including journalism, local government, art, architectural history and design.

RIBA Honorary Fellowships are awarded annually to people who have made a particular contribution to architecture in its broadest sense. This includes its promotion, administration and outreach; and its role in building more sustainable communities and in the education of future generations.

The 2018 RIBA Honorary Fellowships will be awarded to:

• Maria Balshaw – Director of Tate
• Pablo Bronstein – Artist
• Dinah Casson – Designer
• Evan Davis – BBC Presenter
• Ian Firth – Structural and Civil Engineer
• Hattie Hartman – Journalist
• Catherine Ince – Senior Curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum
• Wasfi Kani – Grange Park Opera’s founder and chief executive
• Dr Tia Kansara – Economist, consultant
• Sadiq Khan – Mayor of London
• Ruth Lande Shuman – Industrial Designer
• Robert Powell – Former Creative Director of BEAM, Author and Poet
• Tom Stuart-Smith – Landscape Design
• Tamsie Thomson – Director of the London Festival of Architecture

The lifetime honour allows recipients to use the initials Hon FRIBA after their name.

The 2018 RIBA Honorary Fellowships will be presented at a special event at the RIBA, 66 Portland Place, London, W1B in early 2018.

Background

Honorary Fellowships are awarded by the RIBA each year to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the quality of architecture, the achievements of the profession and the aims and objectives of the RIBA. Any person who is not an architect may be nominated by RIBA members and elected as an Honorary Fellow.

The 2018 RIBA Honours Committee who selected the 2018 Fellows was chaired by RIBA President Ben Derbyshire with Cany Ash, Edward Cullinan (RGM 2008), Lady Jill Ritblat and Sarah Wigglesworth.

2018 RIBA Honorary Fellowships Winners

2018 RIBA Honorary Fellows:

Maria Balshaw – Director of Tate Art Museums & Galleries. Formerly Director of the Whitworth Gallery, the redevelopment of which was shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2015.

Pablo Bronstein – Pablo Bronstein is an Argentinian artist who lives and works in London. His work ranges from drawing to choreography and performance; always with a focus on architecture.

Dinah Casson – Dinah is an environmental and exhibition designer who has worked on the British Galleries at the V&A and the Great North Museum in Newcastle, through to the highly technological Churchill Museum in the Cabinet War Rooms and the Lord Ashcroft gallery at the Imperial War Museum.

Evan Davis – BBC broadcaster and journalist, Evan is a keen advocate and ambassador for architecture and the built environment sector. His programmes include Built in Britain which looked at the role of major infrastructure projects in the UK.

Ian Firth – As a Civil Engineer, Ian has been involved in some of the defining projects of our time, notably the Olympic Stadium, Millennium Dome and National Theatre.

Hattie Hartman – The sustainability correspondent of The Architects’ Journal since 2008, Hattie is an accomplished and erudite writer and campaigner who has championed and helped to shape the profession’s agenda.

Catherine Ince – Senior Curator at the V&A East and previously at the Barbican and the British Council where she was co-director of their Architecture, Design & Fashion Department; through numerous exhibitions and projects Catherine has expanded the reach of architecture to a wide audience.

Wasfi Kani – Wasfi founded the Grange Park Opera in Hampshire in 1998 which as it approaches its twentieth anniversary can boast an enviable track record of operas and festivals staged in the restored Georgian estate, the restoration of which was led by Wasfi and received RIBA and Crown Estate awards upon its completion in 2004.

Dr Tia Kansara – Dr Tia Kansara is an expert in economics and sustainable design with a particular interest in sustainable cities. Having formed a partnership with RIBA Past President Rod Hackney in 2008 her numerous roles and interests, particularly in sustainable design, have seen her present to the World Health Platform, the Indian School of Structure & Planning, the Royal Geographic Society and the European Parliament. She is currently working on the first energy baseline of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

Sadiq Khan – Mayor of London and Labour politician, during his tenure as Mayor Sadiq has championed initiatives to increase diversity in architecture and design and to stimulate the conditions for genuinely affordable and well-designed new houses to be built in the capital.

Ruth Lande Shuman – A community based volunteer in New York, Ruth believes firmly in the power of architecture and one’s surroundings to improve the education opportunities of young people. As the founder of Publicolor and through her skills as a designer, Ruth’s work addresses the root causes of poverty and under education through architecture and design.

Robert Powell – Until recently, Robert was the Creative Director for BEAM, the arts and place making charity based in Wakefield. Over his 18 years in this capacity, Robert chaired the Architecture Centre Network, has served on Design Review Panels in Yorkshire and the Northwest and written extensively and more recently has served on Sir Terry Farrell’s Review of Architecture and the Built Environment.

Tom Stuart-Smith – Tom is a Landscape Architect whose work includes the new Windsor Great Park, which was designed to honour the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, Mount St John in Yorkshire and Broughton Grange in Oxfordshire. Of the eight gardens Tom has designed for the Chelsea Flower Show, three have been awarded Best in Show.

Tamsie Thomson – Tamsie runs Europe’s biggest annual architecture festival, the London Festival of Architecture. As Director of the RIBA’s London Region from 2009 until 2016, Tamsie oversaw the creation of several distinctive RIBA programmes including the Shop Windows projects in London and Shanghai, and through a wide range of initiatives developed opportunities and fresh networks for students and emerging practices in the capital.

RIBA announces 2014 Honorary Fellowships

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) today (Wednesday 18 September) announced the 2014 RIBA Honorary Fellowships which will be awarded to nine individuals from a diverse spectrum of backgrounds, including the worlds of business, local government, media, education and the arts.

The 2014 RIBA Honorary Fellowships:
