Shepherds Barn by LEAP has been announced as the 2022 Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Northeast Building of the Year.
A conversion of an existing barn into a family home, located on the outskirts of Lanchester in County Durham. The owners bought the plot with extant planning permission, and their aspiration was to create a contemporary, cozy and comfortable home that “touched the earth lightly
RIBA President, Simon Allford said:
“Winning a regional Building of the Year Award is a major achievement. Across the country projects have been selected for this accolade because they are exemplars of the very best of innovative, intelligent and delightful design.
The results of positive collaboration between architect and client, and design team and contractor, they demonstrate that high quality, sustainable architecture can positively impact the lives of the people that engage with it.
My warmest congratulations to all those involved.”
The RIBA Regional Building of the Year Awards were presented at a ceremony at the RIBA’s Headquarters in London on Tuesday evening.
Shepherds Barn is one of three projects which received a 2022 RIBA Northeast Award, announced earlier this month.
All RIBA Northeast Award winners will now be considered for a highly-coveted RIBA National Award in recognition of their architectural excellence, which will be announced in June. The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize for the best building of the year will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning projects later in the year.
