This city is the capital of Greece. It is largest city in Greece, and located in the Attica region. Its recorded history spans over 3,400 years. The city is considered to be the birthplace of democracy, and is also referred to as the cradle of Western civilization.
It contains two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Acropolis of Athens and the medieval Daphni Monastery. In 1834 the city was established as the capital of the independent Greek state.
Landmarks include the Hellenic Parliament, the National Library of Greece, the Acropolis Museum, the Museum of Cycladic Art, the Byzantine and Christian Museum, and the Benaki Museum.
The first modern city plan developed using a triangular layout defined by the Acropolis, the ancient cemetery of Kerameikos and the new palace of the Bavarian king (now housing the Greek Parliament). The design aimed to highlight the continuity between modern and ancient times.
Neoclassicism, the international style of this epoch, was the architectural style through which architects such as Hansen, Klenze, Boulanger or Kaftantzoglou designed the first important public buildings of the new capital. In 1896 the Greek capital hosted the first modern Olympic Games.
